RICHLER’S LATEST The newest batch of books to be displayed on the new arrivals sheli includes several Canadian ‘‘biggies.’’ Solomon Gursky Was Here is Mordecai Richler’s latest novel, his most ambitious and mysterious to date. Solomon Gursky belongs to a family of famous bootleggers-turned-legitimate businessmen and he follows a very different path from his brothers, one a rambunctious businessman, the other a weak willed mediator. When still a youth, he was kidnapped by his peculiar grandfather, Ephraim, and taken to the Polar Sea where he learned about survival and acquired a deep mysticism. Young Moses Berger, son of a failed poet, becomes obsessed with the name Solomon Gursky and devotes his life to discovering his startling secrets. Berger's quest leads him to the grandfather, an ex-convict, forger and charismatic religious leader, a seducer of both men and women. Richler’s customary humor diffuses a lot of the tension and draws us into a world of intriguing charac- ters. Who is the mysterious women with one blue eye and one brown? Where is Mary Lou's first husband, who was lost in the mail? PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER William Deverell’s best-selling crime novels have a ring of authenticity as he’s a criminal and civil rights lawyer-He’s also the creator CBC TV’s popular Street Legal series. His sixth novel, Mindfield, is a psychological thriller set in Montreal. Dr. Satorius, head of a psychiatric clinic just outside the city, is taken to court by former patients, accused of unorthodox drug treatment and brainwashing experiments 25 years earlier, His much publicized trial and a series of recent murders draw Kellen O'Reilly and the sexy Sarah Paradis, trial lawyers for the patients, into an ever. widening web of intrigue involving the CIA, the FBI, the Mafia and the police. Mindfield is soon to be a major motion picture starring Christopher Plummer and Michael Ironside. 1 Musgrave is a collection of newspaper colum- ns and magazine articles by the poet and novelist Susan Musgrave. With a wicked sense of humor she tackles subjects such as writer’s block, poetry reading, marriage ina maximum security prison, posing nude for Saturday Night magazine and the hazards of being a mother anda writer too SHORT STORIES To quote Saturday Night in another context, the magazine calls Mavis Gallant ‘‘one of the best writers of our language, an artist who is above fad and fashion."” The Toronto Star calls her ‘one of our very best fiction writers.”’ In her ninth collection of short stories In Tran- sit, she amply demonstrates the truth of these testimonials. With elegant precision and a discerning eye for telling detail, Gallant gives us a host of remarkable characters struggling to rise above the im- _NEW HOURS 10 A.M..0 P.. 1521 "Coburn ve. 365. 8388 CALL AHEAD, DRIVE fee. SERVICE ISLAND LIVES In After the Fire, B.C, writer Jane Rule has woven together the stories of five women who live on a small island community off the B.C. coast. Karen, a half- Japanese girl, is learning to live alone after leaving a lover in Vancouver; Milly is also alone after a bitter divorce; Miss James, a well-travelled teacher, has retired to the island; Red is a rootless loner trying to live life on her own terms and Henrietta opens with everyone’s problems as well as her own and wishes she didn’t. A fire which destroys a house and kills the man who lived there is the first in a series of events that will unsettle the lives of all the women, NORTHERN MEDICINE Medicine, Madams and Mounties is the delightful title Dr. Allan Duncan has given his collection of reminiscences of his practice in the Yukon from 1933 to 1947. He was the only doctor for 400 miles, stationed in the town of Mayo on the banks of the Stewart River, so his life was packed with incident and medical drama. The people he met — such as the fur trapper who demonstrated how to light a fire without matches (with a gun and a bulletless shell and some rags on the kitchen floor) and the RCMP officer who could play likean angel any musical. instrument that could be blown, stroked or beaten and whose presence ensured the suc- cess of the local dances — enliven this very real social history with their energy, charm and peculiarities. SUZUKI’S OBSERVATIONS David Suzuki feels that there are profound limits to science that must be recognized if we are to minimize the destructive consequences of using the powers provided by scientific discovery and in his new book Inventing the Future discusses the effect that deforestation has on en- vironment, how acid rain is transforming eco-systems and the way science could be selling us out to the military and big business. He raises the question, Is science being used to promote racism? and asks what we should be demanding of our educators to help future generations tackle the mess we're in. His reflections on science, technology and nature are incisive, disarming and can- did and should be required reading for all government leaders and business tycoons. PASSION FOR THE ROCK It’s 40 years since Newfoundland entered the Canadian Confederation and Farley Mowat is com- memorating this anniversary with The New Founde Land, a collection of his own writings about his beloved adopted province, with which he'd had such a long and rich association. He shares with us his passion for the Rock and its history in excerpts from some of his best writing, beginning with the Viking explorers, then the settlers, the fishers and sealers, the great ships’ captains and up to the present day. Not only is the history well covered but he describes most parts of the island in the course of the book and the humor of its inhabitants is given full rein STE AGAIN This lady is not a Canadian writer, but her many fans will be glad to hear we have two copies of her um- pteenth novel.
