GLEN BACKUS it’s because I have a tendency to look much more closely at some seemingly insignificant matters. Oh, I enjoy seeing the neigh- borhood kids in their costumes. When but on Halloween do we have such an Opportunity to get re-acquainted with the likes of Little Bo-Peep, Batman Plus the usual assortment of witches and goblins? No, I’m not disenchanted with this annual spook-a-thon because I dislike dispensing some treats. Actually, I seem to satisfy my own sweet tooth by giving away those chocolate bars and whatever else the Hershey and Brachs People have made available. What really has gotten to me is being confronted by that phrase, “Trick or treat!’ Personally, I don’t care at all to be coerced or threatened im any way. Unfortunately, that is what my ears pick up when I hear those sweet young voices (and a few mot so sweet and all that young) crying out: ‘*Trick or treat!’’ It makes me think of that phrase, ‘‘I’ll make you an offer you can’t refuse,’” Brando in The Godfather back in the 1970s. “I enjoy giving out treats not because I'm buying anyone off but because I simply want to. What is more disturbing for me is that not a few grow up keeping the Hi mindset when it comes to ROBSON COMMUNITY MEMORIAL CHURCH 1st & 3rd Sundays 7:00 p.m 2nd & 4th Sundays 10 om No Service Sth Sunday Fr EVERYONE WELCOME pers c : ; UVELY = Postor 914 Columbia Avenue 11:00 a.m. Family Worship Service 9:45 a.m. Sunday Schoo! These people may live commendable lives on the outside but their reason for doing so is highly Suspect. It seems so dismayingly human to perform certain acts of charity primarily to buy off God. If 1 don’t come through with the required “*treat,”’ God may respond with some kind of wrathful “‘trick.”” St. Paul, valiant apostle and Proclaimer of the Gospel, willingly gave his life for the Kingdom and died @ martyr. Not because he feared what might happen if he didn’t, but out of thankful love for the Savior. In Paul’s words: “For Christ's love compels us!’’ (II Corinthians 5:14). God’s undeserved love for us in Christ, expressed by His willing suf- fering and death for us on the cross @s a payment for our rebelliousness, remains the strongest possible force compelling us to walk in God’s way. St. John in his epistle put it so well: “*We love because He first loved us.”” (I John 4:19).
