W.4. Patterson, who isin full sym- pathy with the Recorp’s efforts'to .in-, duce the people of Rossland ..to dispense . With the Chinese as domestic servants, tells a story which came under hig im- mediate observation in Salem, Oregon, ino restaurant wheres Chinaman was employed as cook. A guest had ordeie’ @ well done steak. which was brought to him rare. It was sent back for better cooking. The Chinaman was mad ard threw the steak upon the stove, spat upon it, turned it over and spat upon it again. As it happened, the gnest from where he eat could eee the performance in the kitchen. He left the restaurant. The story got noised about, and all the board- ers quit the place. Itis needless to add that this put an end to Chinese cooks in Salem for some time after. The China- man referred to knew better. The filthy, unwholerome conduct of the Chinese cooks in Rossland,’ accounts of which have been printed in the Recorp, were ignorant of any wrong doing. Whether .ignorantly or. purposely, well raised peo- ple generally object: to dirty cooks, and a Chinaman is that at best The mine owners of the Slocan seem to lose-sight of the fact that a man will really do as much werk ina mine in eght hours’ asin ten, Many -superin- tendente even go so far as to claim they will do more. ‘A man cannot pound the drill vigorously for ten hours, so reserves his strength for the long pull. If he worked but eight hours every hole would ‘go as deep. It is the willing hands that put in the -holes. The mine ownera and newspapers of Nelson and the Slocan are making a grave mistake in placing obstacles in the way of the eight-hour law. : —— According tothe statement of J. L. Stanford in today’s Reconp the parties who are asking for a franchize to putin a gas plant for Rossland, and who “shave been pigeon-holed by the city council, are financially able and propose to spend $200,000 in ecetablishing the system. As the parties are not asking for any fran- chise, bonus or exemption, the ratepay- ers will not justify the action of the city council in refusing the permiesion acked, for the reason that the city is contem- plating putting in a lighting plant of its own. y a The Reconp was alittle jealous at 3irat on account of tho city engineer's expressed desire to use the columns ‘of ovr contemporary in replying to the let- ter from the water works company. Since we nave rend his two column arti- cle, we bless him on behalf of our read- ers thatke did not choose the Reconp as a imcdium. Some newspapers are lucky, and the Reconp is one of them. a Under the head of “Some Le Roi Fig- ures” the Vancouver Province copies the Rossland Miner's marvelous state- ment that an entirely new ore chute 67 feet wide, and, apparently thinking the story tobe a little fishy as to the Tength adds, “is opened up for a length of 8 feet.” This story of the Miner will yet WILLIAM R.
