It's not that unusual. Tired of the rat race, maybe he wants to spend more time fishing or on the golf course. But Gerald Hobbs, form- erly chairman of the Vancou- ver-based mining giant Com- ineo Ltd., while not _ Former Cominco chief an energy ‘problem. The problem, he believes, is that politicians don't have busi- ness skills and, worse still, such skills aré not made available to them. So Hobbs says more businessmen should leave : “their comfortable corporate niches and take on a broader role, “If my plan works, then : maybe more people will start making a in the "ing the golf course altogether most definitely isn't: putting himself out to pasture. The 59-year-old busines- aman said in an interview last week that he’s about to devote himself to the cause of * politicians larger public arena.” He isn’t condemning the outright. “The flow of information to politic: fans, who have a thankless - § task, has been inadequate. They don’t have access to with skills,” = * good No, he isn't the Stereotype, power- hungry ch you might Hobbs will start getting involved in government by expect to be anxious to run for office. That isn’t in the cards. What is, though, is a mission to disentangle Can- ada from government cont- tol. Hobbs is convinced that Canada is over-regulated, that Canadians have become passive and habituated to bad government on all levels, and that if Canada doesn't take its opportunity - which he sees as coming in the 1980's it will be curtains for a once-vibrant and exciting na- tion. Hobbs is afraid of-sound-* ing idealistic, even a little bit melodramatic, He chooses his words very carefully. Speaks very precisely. In fact, for the first time in about 40 years he is able to say what he wants because he is no longer a professional manager whose ultimate responsibility is to represent the interests of shareholders. But he does take his time because he’s anxious to verb- alize in as simple a manner as possible answers to complex issues. This also fits the: mold of a basic tenet of his crusade. To reduce matters to manag- eable forms. For example, the energy question, he says, has been, grossly mishandled by all levels of government without . reason. “It's a colossal ple of bad issuing with policy stands. For astart, he has a vast reservoir of speeches which he has given over the years as a corporate officer. He admits he'll be perceived as a voice supporting big busi- néss. And he freely admits he won't give up his business activities and maintain a number of directorships. He stresses, however, that he has cut all ties with Cominco Ltd. and its parent, Canadian Pacific Ltd. The 1980 Directory of Directors lists Hobbs: as a director of the Bank of Nova Scotia, B.C. Tel., Dillingham Corp, (U.S.), MacMillan Blo- ede] and Okanagan Helicop- ters, He will provide informa- tion and advice to the officers of those companies with which he is a director and provide insight into the Can- adian milieu to any company that requests it. But back to -his pet theme of over-regulation and the ansesthetizing effect it is having on Canadians.“Gover- nments don't have the capa- city to solve problems while at the same time, the costs of government are so high that the productive capacity of Canada is no longer capable of supplying goods. This has given us a devalued curren- cy, high inflation rates and a lower standard of living.” He's inced that Can- and Tm very dishearted.” Canada shouldn't have ada has “blown one chance” to generate growth and in- Government land for Warfield housing ++. good government needed crease wealth. “The 1970's, due to OPEC and other things, were a window in time in' which Canada had a chance, We have a second opportunity in the 1980's. If we blow it again, then our system will break down, “Already, we have stre- tehed the capacity (of the country) to pay to the limit. We must go back, Stop our greedy fighting over existing wealth and start to create new wealth and stabilize the dollar. We must stop spend- ing capital to bail out ineffic- ient industries in the name of nationalism and use that capital to create a new productive base.” The process of govern- 4 ment isn't just the responsi- i bility of the legislators and pressure groups, he says, “The free citizen, with reaso- nably minimum restraint (go- vernment) must start to solve their problems in their own way.” Isn't he overly optimistic that he, in some way, can spark the dismantling of Canada’s bureaucracy? After all, bureaucracies have a habit of not only surviving, but thriving. China learned this centuries ago. He admits the dream'is not totally attainable but he does hope to get part way. “Tm quite Prepared to go where it takes me,” he says with a’ twinkle, “I'm also in search of adventure.” VANCOUVER SUN ®©®BEAVER CORRECTION Our Advertisement on page C2 this week a was printed with a in error in the Shrub price.
