a t C4 CASTLEGAR NEWS, October 28, 1981 Designed to keep families together VANCOUVER (CP) — Two years ago, Nancie Fer- guson was drinking heavily. Caring for her two children was more than she could handle. “A buildup of problem af- ter problem” came to & hea when Mikhall, now 8, and Jeannette, now 8, were ap- rehended by a social worker and put in a foster home. “When the kids were scooped (apprehended), things got worse,” she re- - calls, Despite treatment for her alcoho! problem, she was on the verge of losing her son and daughter permanently. So she jumped at the chance to participate in Proj- ect Parent, a ministry of hu- Helping parents build self- esteem is crucial, Smith says. “It's pretty hard to be a good parent if you think you're not worth much.” Smith and social worker aq Karen Lewis are part of a team that includes five family workers, a preschool consul- tant, who cooks and a sec- retary. Lewis estimates she and her colleagues spend about 18 hours a week with clients. “It takes time to build a re- lationship.” A typical day includes a parent discussion group, an outing for parents and chil- dren, a directed play-period for the children and one-to- o ne for parents. man fr prog aimed at keeping families to- gether. For four months, Ferguson met her children twice week- ly in the warren of playrooms and meeting rooms that forms the project's offices. After a 15-month separa- tion, Ferguson and her chil- dren needed time to adjust to each other. Now, they share a home again. For the next year, she'll continue at Project Parent two days a week, taking part in a support group made up of other parents in a similar situation and learning paren- tal skills. “I wish I'd known about this when my daughter was young,” she says. “It's too bad you have to have a prob- lem before you can come here.” WAITING LIST In operation since 1973, Project Parent can handle 25 families at the East Broad- way centre, and 30 at the west side centre.-Both have 15 or 20 families on a waiting list. “We believe that in almost allcases, children are best off with their own natural par- ents,” says Carolyn Smith, east side project co-ordin- ator. “These parents need a chance to prove themselves. Given even half a chance, they do very well.” Parents are encouraged to take an active role in de- signing a program for them- selves, choosing discussion topics and places to visit on field trips. “We try to minimize that ‘us and them’ situation, try to be responsive to their ideas about how this place should be run,” Smith says. She is especially proud of her two male family workers, important in the lives of pre- school children who often miss a chance to be close to adult men. “The role modelling that those men do for the children and the mothers shows them a very different kind of male involvement which children and family that is very important,” she believes. (CP) — ‘The growing number of , young people bent on self- destruction is a sign that so- ciety is in a “crisis of love" and teachers must begin fill- ing their students’ hearts as which he said are often sui- cides in disguise. TOUGH YOUNGSTERS Bosco Homes in Regina, which Larre founded 10 years ago, has treated 300 tough children, including well as their minds, a Regina priest said Friday. Lucien Larre, director of a group of homes for severely troubled teenagers, said the role of the teacher as a sup- plier of information is being made obsolete by television and computers that can do the job better. But he said it is more important than ever that teachers become involved in * interpersonal relationships with students, teaching them }) they are “beautiful, precious,’ “and lovable.” Larre told a national con- ference on learning disabil- ities that drug abuse and de- linquency stem from emo- tional problems and not from inadequate instruction at home or school. “We never had so many lonesome people,” said Larre, whose speeci brought the audience of 600, mainly tea- chers, to their feet. “We have a lot of young people in our society who just don't care what happens to them because no one has ever loved them.” He said the suicide rate ~ among young people has risen by 368 per cent in the last 30 years and now is the second leading cause of teen- Play tattoos laced with LSD BELLEVUE, WASH. They don't care much if they pass or fail in school because a great many don’t care if they live or die.” Children develop negative attitudes about themselves because they don't have adults around to show them love and trust. Larre’ said teachers should be filling the gap, developing close re- lationships with their stu- dents, making them feel important. Larre, who has degrees in education and psychology and has taught in a regular school system, stressed that emotional problems are not confined to the extreme cases.
