An opening reception will be held at 7:30 p.m The exhibit, entitled A Show of Hands, will be on display throughout October. According to the NEC, the exhibit of 30 pieces of craftwork represents the culmination of two years’ work by the centre and the Kootenay Boundary Artisans’ Alliance to produce an exhibit for national circulation. “After the success of the 1984 A Show of Hands, it was decided that the next logical step for the group of artisans and their work would be to share it with the rest of the country,” the NEC says in a prepared release. It was then decided that the centre and the alliance should pool their resources to produce the exhibit. A call for entries was made and of the 75 entries received, jurors Marie Shaw-Rimimington (Cartwright Street Gallery, Vancouver) and Les Manning (Banff School of Fine Art) chose 30 pieces that they felt reflected a national standard of excellence. “Because the centre is part of the National Exhibition Centre m, it was felt that this exhibit should be produced exclusively for the network,” says the release. = “In this way, because National Exhibition Centres represent a high level of professionalism and quality, the Show of Hands opens ARTISANS EXHIBIT . . . After a 1'4-year tour of Canada, the 1984 Show of Hands exhibit returns to the National Exhibition Centre Thursday exhibit would be presented warranted.” The exhibit has been booked by NECs in Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, British Columbia and the Northwest Territories. in a manner that it 100-CITY TOUR — Monkee mania By ROBERT MACY Associated Press LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The harried waitress struggled down an aisle jammed with screaming fans. drew a deep breath and exclaimed, “It's just like when Elvis was here!” The reason for the ruckus was Monkee mania at the elegant showroom of the Las Vegas Hilton. “It's been awesome,” said recycled Monkee Micky Dolenz, 41, now a successful London TV producer. “I have no idea how much we'll make, but it’s a considerable amount of money. It's just exploded.” The explosion is the 20th-anniversary tour of the “made-for-television” rock group that shot to stardom in September 1966, disbanding at the zenith of its popularity two years later The 100-city tour has been so successful the Monkees plan return visits to some cities where halls sold out in 90 minutes, Dolenz said. The Hilton showroom, where Elvis Presley reigned for years and set attendance records still unbroken, was packed recently as the Monkees played Las Vegas for the first time Two generations of screaming women jammed around the footlights. “T'd like to take you back to a time when boys liked girls CLASSICALISACRED PIANO CONCERT WITH CRAIG WEBBER Saturday, October 4 at 8 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church 809 Merry Creek Rood Retreshments served during intermission Tickets $7.50 available in Nelsen at Oliver s Books. Bewildered security guards scurried to fend off female fans who crawled on stage, trying to touch the trio. The wild reception on turf reserved for some of the biggest names in show business left Dolenz and company somewhat agog “We're all unified in wanting to see this go as far as it can.” he said of future Monkee ventures. “I'm certainly not going to look a gift Monkee in the mouth. But we're not zoing to flog a dead horse. We didn’t do that in the ‘60s. We quit while we were on top. We left them wanting.” The four Monkees were selected from over 500 applicants during auditions in 1965 to create a group for a TV show that would capitalize on the superstar Beatles. Only Peter Tork and Mike Nesmith later went into television production. Jones and Tork continued to perform when the group disbanded in 1968, sometimes touring together. Nesmith, 43, was unable to make the Monkee reunion tour because of film commitments. The current tour was a natural extension of what Jones and Tork were doing. For Dolenz, it was a whole new ball game. “It took me quite a while to get back into performing,” he said. “I was self-conscious, walking on stage. knowing where to put my hands.” MAKES OFFERS There have been numerous movie offers, talk of television, and a hit song, appropriately titled That Was Then, This Is Now which has rocketed to the Top 20 Dolenz would like to see the Monkees make one feature movie a year along the slapstick lines of the Marx Brothers, a group the late John Lennon compared them to 20 years ago. very “We could do the Monkees on the Moon, the Monkees Under the Sea, a great summer movie with a great sound track,” Dolenz enthused, arms sweeping in a wide are as he moved about in his hotel suite Tuesday Special 4PM. Catering — Thursday Bingo Oct. 9 Kent still unknown MONTREAL (CP) — Director Larry Kent is probably the most important Canadian film pioneer you never hear of. Kent, who has kept his “day job” in the Montreal Gazette's composing room for the past 10 years while making movies, arrived in Vancouver in 1967 from his native South Africa when the Canadian film industry was noted only for documentaries and animated features. The Canadian feature film industry was virtually non-existant — until Kent made Bitter Ash, « full-length drama that cost $5,000 to make while he was at the University of British Columbia. : Trivia buffs might note that film, along with Claude Jutra’s A tout prendre, were the only Canadian commercial features made in 1963. In the 22 years since, Kent made 13 feature films, the most recent being High Stakes, a $3-million comedy shot in British Columbia last November and December. “When I arrived, I was a total stranger to this country,” said Kent, 46. “I didn't know enough not to start making features.” IMPOSSIBLE DREAM Kent trained as a printer after arriving in Vancouver but always had “an impossible dream” of making films. He started pursuing his dream after meeting someone with a 16 millimetre camera. “I wrote, directed and juced Bitter Ash,” he recalled. “We shot it completely silent and then dubbed the whole thing in afterwards.” The film was an instant hit on college campuses and also got a good reception from the critics. Since then, Kent's features have used the talents of such major artists as Margot Kidder, Cloris Leachman, Eddie Albert, Carold Laure, Susan Sarandon and Diane Keaton. His films have won prizes in New York, London, Berlin, Cork, San Francisco, Buenos Aires, as well as Montreal. His film Yesterday, screened under various titles including This Time Forever, was up for four Genie awards and was one of the top-10 grossing films in Japan in 1980. In most cases, Kent makes nothing from the screenings partly because of what he admits was his “own stupidity” in dealing with distributors. He continues to get work not because he’s a whiz at SALE THURS., FRI. & SAT. OCT. 2-4 —BOTH LOCATIONS— SKI PACKAGES === $9399 ALL ’85-'86 SKI EQUIPMENT AND CLOTHING UP TO 60. As a result, Kent has no control over the broadcast or sales of his movies — several of which have proved to be quite profitable for distributors. A family man with two daughters, Kent can't make a living from his movies. So he comes into the Gazette four days a week and spends the rest of his time going over scripts, working out film deals and teaching acting at a local studio. { When has to go behind the camera, he usually combines vacation time with a leave of absence. His personal favorites in his own filmography are usually his earliest works, including When Tomorrow Dies, a 1965 film Kent describes as “vastly ahead of its time. “It's about a housewife who's very dissatisified with her life, and it deals with issues that eventualy set up women’: lib,” he said. “I've never met a woman who didn’t like it.” Kent feels his move to Quebec may have something to do with the fact he’s not a household in name in Canada. “I was well-known in the late 1960s and early 1970s. People recognized my worth,” he said. “but when you become an English film-maker in Quebec, you're fot Feally it in Toronto. “But a lot of film-makers become au courant for awhile, go away and come back. Right now, I'm probably making something of a comeback.” PLAZA FERRARO'S Open for Your Shopping Convenience SUNDAYS ll a.m.-5 p.m. a crate rar The All New Boston Pizza You'll Have to see it to Believe it. — Totally Renovated — New Dinner Menu Including Steak, Bar-B-Que Ribs, and Multitude of Pastas including Seatood, Lasagna 1612 Bey Avenue, Trail, B.C.
