The Canadian Pres: The realities of getting to and playing in the National Hockey League have never been spelled out so clearly Rick Heinz, former NHL goaltender, has stripped the glamor from hockey's big time and provided the bare, if not frightening facts in his book Many Are Called . Few Are Signed. It's an expose that the fan, the parent and the youngster with NHL aspirations will find worth while. Heinz, 33, a native of Essex, Ont., played U.S. college hockey at the University of Minnesota-Duluth before signing with the NHL's St, Louis Blues in 1979. He appeared in 49 NHL games with the Blués and the Vancouver Canucks before his career petered out in the minors in 1986. Heinz, like many others, advises the NHL to‘ go back toa draft where 20-eyar-old players represent the minimum age, rather than the current 18. He also tells teenagers to keep open the possibility of playing U.S cdllege hockey “The young kids need time to develop not only on the ice, but off the ice, he says of the NHL draft. “Many are given a t di amount of r y and they are unable to handle it. In some cases, it costs a kid his career.” On U.S. colleges: “It is the smartest avenue to the pros. Not only can you get a chance to play in the big league, but also you can get a good education at the same time. With the odds being so much against the average hockey player making the NHL, you can fall back on your education if things fail to work out.” An agent is a necessity for a teenager going the I was a very average hockey player (some experts _ junior hockey route rather than the U.S. college path, in the game thought.I was less than average), who got _he says.
