Muirhead said the program will help educate those who deal with people inflicted with HIV/AIDS, as well as help build and strength- en supportive social environments within communities. “Sometimes dementia comes with HIV progression. But when they go into a crisis situation, the community doesn't know how to respond.” Muirhead also plans to involve youth in educating other teens about behavior which puts them at risk of contracting the disease “People aren't paying attention to HIV/AIDS. They still believe they're dealing with a homosexu- al disease.” said Muirhead. “But teens have the highest incidence of sexually transmitted dfScuses. We know they're not using condoms. More funding available for local AIDS/HIV patients Muirhead said the Nelson Youth Council is already involved in HIV/AIDS education. Among other activities, the Council is sponsoring an AIDS Ball this fall “We're looking actively toward doing the same things in Castlegar — training youth to go and talk with their peers.” Contrary to popular belief, Muirhead said that women and teens are the fastest growing group of people with the disease. Therefore,, youth speaking to youth about HIV/AIDS is a valid and timely concept. “It’s really important for us to get out there in the population we know will have to face [the dis- ease] more frequently than us. Teaching at this point is vital.” ANKORS will receive three installments of the federal fund- ing grant: $36,000 for 1994/95; $50,000 for 1995/96; and another $50,000 for 1996/97 Seniors reminded of flu shot SUN STAFF In days past influenza, or the “flu” was feared. Before antibi- otics, those infected with the flu ran a real risk of succumbing to secondary infections as a result of the flu. But this is the 90s, and the development of flu vaccines has greatly reduced the incidents of mortality from the flu. In Canada, the vaccine is being offered free of charge to those most at risk— seniors over 65 years old and adults and ¢hildren with heart and lung problems who are under doctor’s care. This year, the vaccine offers protection against the strains A/Johannesburg, A/Texas, and B/Beijing Clinics for the vaccine will be held at St. Rita’s Parish hall on Wednesday, Oct. 4, Oct. 11, and Oct. 25 But those in good health can also help protect themselves: against the flu. Public Health Nurse Cindy Talarico said people can call their physician to schedule an appointment to receive the vac- cine. There is a small charge, but Talarico points out that the costs of contracting the virus far outweigh the cost of the vaccination. “There won't be any lost- work days. It's a tremendously cost- effective thing to do.” Influenza is highly contagious and can leave its victim vulnera- ble to secondary infections— bacterial pneumonia being the most common complication. Statistic show that more than 1,000 Canadians succumb to the virus each year. Symptoms include runny nose, headache, muscle pain, fever, diarrhea and nausea. The vaccination offers up to 90 per cent protection against the current influenza strain. Gouk, the Reform Party’s Transport and Privatization Crit- ic in the House of Commons, accused the Ministry of Trans- port of unfairly paying down more than half of CN’s massive $2.5 billion debt, in preparation for the company’s upcoming public stock issue. The stock issue is tentatively planned for later this fall “TI believe that someone lied to us at the Transport Committee,” said Gouk. “This is the very thing I was concerned about when I tried to limit [Transpon Minister] Doug Young's power to arbitrari- ly pay off CN's debt.” Gouk pointed out that when the proposed CN privatization ‘ legislation came before the 2 . between education and business mu or oY a ae Transport Committee last spring, at $2.5 billion, but needed to be reduced to $1.5 billion to make a public stock issue viable Gouk said government offi- cials informed the committee that CN’s non-rail assets (such as real estate) were worth between $400 million and $600 million. Money from the sale of these assets was to be combined with company cash reserves in the range of $300-400 million. Gouk said Transport officials implied to him that the total funding from these two sources would likely accomplish CN's needed debt reduction — mean- ing that any direct federal cash payments would be minimal, if needed at all. “But now the government is planning to pay off $900 million worth of CN debt itself, as well as paying $500 million for CN’'s non-rail assets,” said Gouk “Those assets have since been estimated as having a book value of only $235 million.” Gouk accused the government of either covering up its real plans for CN’s privatization, or being unforgivably sloppy with its Original financial figures. “If those people actually believed What they. were telling us, they are \Brossly incompe- tent,” said Gouk. “If their figures are that far out from what they were telling us, they should have returned to Parliament with some more realistic numbers before sinking Canadian taxpayers if not another billion dollars into debt.” / He complained that the current financial mess is only the latest in 1. a long line of government foul ups and bad judgments to hit the CN privatization effort “The legislation was wrong to restrict the numaber of shares that anyone can own, wrong to force the company’s headquarters to remain in Montreal, and wrong not to give Canadians and Canadian companies the first crack at buying into their rail heritage," said Gouk “Now the government is adding to its deceitfulness with its unjustified restructuring of CN'’s debt load. What lies and deceit will tum up next?” a KAREN KERKHOFF Sun Staff The Castlegar school district is hoping to build partnerships between business and schools With the help of a $75,000 grant from the Ministry of Educa- tion, the district will be hiring an apprenticeship coordinator who will facilitate those partnerships. “The coordinator will work with the secondary schools to try and build partnerships between the schools and the employers,” said ond money monthly Insurance. * Castlegar 365-2773 + hail 364-1285 “Coordinator will bridge gap Everette Surgenor, superintendent for the Castlegar school district.
