CALL MONTREAL (CP) — They played the game with such fire and flair during the five National Hockey League seasons between 1955-56 and 1959-69 that the exploits of the Mon treal Canadiens should have been preserved for all time. Molstar Communications has done just that, with the release Friday of a five-video package chronicling the era that produced five straight Stanley Cup championships. The videocassettes, which will sell for $19.95 each and $89.95 as a set, will be distributed across Canada by next month, with sales in Quebec, eastern Ontario and the Maritimes to start this weekend. “We've been talking about making the videos for the last five or six years,” said Frank Selke Jr., the director of hockey affairs and busi ness development for Molstar and an employee of the Canadiens in the golden era. “We had this marvellous film footage in the archives, and finally we said: ‘Let's do it.’ “Probably 90 per cent of the hockey fans today have never seen Henri (Richard), Big Jean (Beliveau) or the Rocket (Richard) and the Boomer (Geoffrion) play. This was a marvellous opportunity for us to get into the video market.” Molstar has released one other hockey video — last year the company produced a cassette of the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 1967 Stanley Cup victory over the Canadiens, and Selke said “it's had pretty good sales in and around Toronto,” GLOWING PAST Beliveau, the graceful centre on the championship teams, is the nar. rator for the French and English versions of the videos. He attended the news conference Friday and was joined by a number of former team. mates; many of whom spoke glow ingly of old times. “It's true that we had a very well balanced team, the ideal team that any coach would love to have,” de- clared Beliveau. “We had two solid offensive lines and a great defensive line, with Claude Proyost, Donnie Marshall and Andre Pronovost, a great defence, led by Doug Harvey, and Jacques Plante in the hets.” The question most frequently asked of Beliveau and other members of the dynasty is whether any team will match or surpass the five Stanley Cup victories. The Canadiens captured the trophy four straight years between 1975-76 and 1978-79, as did the New York Islanders be- tween 1979-80 and 1982-83. “I remember in 1967-68, the year of the first NHL expansion, some rep resentatives of the press asked me what I thought, and my first reaction was that it was the end of long dyn. asties,” recalled Beliveau. “The turn- over of players is much quicker than it was in the '50s, so it would be very difficult for any organization to sus. tain and put on the ice a team that TOURNEY TIME ~ Stanley Humphries secon Volleyball action was the main attraction at lary school Friday in the School District No. 9 elementary school volleyball tournament. Hunting season extended The Ministry of Environment has announced a 20-day extension of limited entry hunting seasons for deer and elk in the Koot region. of the financially troubled Canadian Football League team. “We agreed that both parties will meet in five days,” Galdenzi said after meeting for about 1 hours with Donald Crump, treasurer of Maple Leafs Gardens Ltd. “We agreed also that we'd like to clear this whole matter up by the end of the month.” The sales bid follows Ticat owner Harold Ballard’s dispute with the city of Hamilton over $300,000 the city claims he owes in back rent on Ivor Wynne Stadium. Ballard, the irascible owner of the CFL team and the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League, started pulling Ticat football equipment out of Ivor Wynne last Sunday afternoon. The city reacted by changing the locks at the aging football stadium and Ballard has since stated that he will sell, fold or move the money-losing team to Toronto. Galdenzi and Paul Cowell, who represents a group of Hamilton investors who have not been identified, held a preliminary meeting with Crump to discuss the two hours by Crump after Ballard said he would be unable to attend the meeting. “Is Harold playing another one of his tricks on us poor Hamiltonians?” Galdenzi asked. “We've had tricks in the past from Harold.” Galdenzi, 36, said he’s convinced the franchise is for meeting. sale, although Ballard’s stated selling price of one dollar is not a realistic figure. Crump said this week the asking price was $1.5 million. “That was not discussed — said Galdenzi, who added that the offer he submits next week will establish a price tag for the Tiger-Cats. Crump was not avaiable for comment following the there's really no price,” Although other buyers have offered to purchase inside track. the Tiger-Cats, Galdenzi and Cowell are the first to meet Crump in person. They believe they have the “Mr. Galdenzi wants some time to put (an offer) together and we have assurances that we have five days to do it,” said Cowell. Police arrest suspect in Spencer slaying RIVIERA BEACH, FLA. (CP) — Police have arrested a second suspect in the June slaying of former National Hockey League player Brian Spencer. Larry Johnson, 30, was arrested without a struggle Thursday morn- ing at his mother's home in Riviera Beach, said Capt. Jerry Poreba. Police had been looking for Johnson since Leon Daniels, 25, was arrested in June, Poreba said. John son had been living in Oklahoma. Johnson faces charges of first- degree murder, armed robbery, at- tempted armed robbery, possession of a firearm during a felony and possession of a firearm by a convic- ted felon, said Poreba. He appears before a judge today to enter a plea and have bond set, said Poreba. Daniels is charged with attempted armed robbery, possession of a fire- arm during a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Spencer, 38, was shot while sitting in a friend's truck in a seedy part of Riviera Beach, near Miami. His com. panion told police Spencer was the victim of a robbery attempt after a cocaine deal. The native of Fort. St. James played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Buffalo Sabres, the New York Islanders and the Pittsburgh Pen- guins before dropping to the minor leagues and finally retiring in 1979. After retiring, he drifted around. finding work as a mechanic. In 1987, he was acquitted of murder in the 1982 killing of a West Palm Beach restaurant owner.
