Glory years revived in SHSS's current success By ED MILLS Staff Writer The titles continue to mount The Stanley Humphries junior girls and junior boys volleyball teams added two more last weekend to a.growing list,of high school championship titles for Castlegar. The latest prizes for the school’s trophy case are two West Kootenay Volleyball Championships, .won by the Rockettes at L.V. Rogers high school in Nelson and by the Rockers at home at SHSS. It was the third straight year Stanley Humphries has captured the junior girls title while the boys ended a 14-year drought in the winners circle, The latest wins come on the heels of a strong provincial showing by the swimming ‘and cross-country running teams, and just prior to the senior girls volleyball team's trip to Kelowna for a crack at the provin- cial title Stanley Humphries principal Jack Closkey says he hasn’t seen a year this successful since the mid- to late 1970s when. SH dominated every sport in the West Kootenay. Although the winter and spring teams have yet to begin com- petition, Closkey ranks this year’s athletic accomplishments in the “top three or four,”” he’s seen in his 21 years at the school “What's happening,” he says, ‘is that you can see a resurgence of a dominance SHSS had. We've had some lean years the last couple of years but it’s coming back and that’s good to see.” Leona Powell, coach of the junior girls, liked what she saw as the Rockettes rolled over Rossland secondary 15-1 and 15-2 in the championship game that lasted less than 20 minutes The Rockettes toughtest victory came in the semi-finals against hometown favorite, Nelson’s L.V. Rogers secondary. After crunching LVR 15-2 in game one, the Rocket- tes let up and lost game two 15-6. The girls regrouped for the deciding game to win 15-8 and ad- vance into the finals against Rossland. In the junior boys championship at SHSS, the Rockers came from behind twice to sweep the cham- pionship in two games, 15-13 and 15-11 over J.L. Crowe. On the road to the finals, the Jacque and Barry DePaoli- coached Rockers were taken to the limit before defeating Trafalgar 9-15, 15-10 and 15-10. The boys then’ went on to sweep Mount Sentinel to advance to the championship final. Stanley Humphries director of student activities, Doug Hickey, said that in two or three years it’s likely the athletic program at the school will be even better as suc- cessful juniors become successful servers. And that’s a sign he says that the program is achieving its goals. **What it means to the program . is number one, kids want to play and kids want to be successful, kids also want to have fun and I think we’re providing those oppor- tunities to them,”’ said Hickey.
