According to figures released Mon- day by Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc., Warren Beatty's Dick Tracy claimed the biggest opening weekend ever by a film released by Walt Disney Studios. But playing in the crowded summer movie season, the crime caper failed to surpass Arnold Schwarzenegger's Total Recall for the season’s top opening weekend. Total Recall, opening three weeks ago, grossed $25.5 million US its first weekend. The Dick Tracy haul included $1.2 million in sales for T-shirts that sub- stituted for tickets at midnight openings. The film is playing on 2,332 screens across North America. The debut weekend box-office championship remains with Batman, which collected $40.5 million US for Warner Bros. in its first weekend last summer. The true test for Dick Tracy, co- starrifg Al Pacino, Glenne Headley and Madonna, will come over the next three weekends. In order, Dick Tracy will clash with RoboCop 2, Days of Thunder and Die Hard 2. Falling 45 per cent to second place was the sequel Another 48 HRS., revisiting the police adventures of Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy. CASTLEGAR CHAMBER OF t ] 1995- LOCAL NEWS Reading program receives funds By CasNews Staff The Castlegar and District Library has received enough funds to possibly hire one student to run the summer reading program this year, but two students are needed because of the workload, head librarian Judy Wearmouth said. “It's far.too much work for one,"’ Wearmouth told the Castlegar News Tuesday after hearing the Castlegar school board voted Monday to provide $1,000 toward the program if it goes ahead. Wearmouth asked the school trustees earlier this month for $5,000 to hire students for the program the library runs each year. Three service clubs and a number ‘of parents’ groups have also been asked to help and several of the Parents’ groups have agreed to make contributions, she added. The program helps students keep up their reading skills while school is out and can lead to forming a habit of going to the library, Wearmouth told the school board during an education forum June 4, The library usually hires its students with funds provided through federal Challenge grants but the library's Fequest “was turned down this year, she said.
