toting oe a ae Ae = 20° esday, July 15,1992 Aquanauts developing trend NEWS STAFF A familiar pattern is start- ing to develop for the Castle- gar Aquanauts. Perennial contenders in the pool, 1992 is shaping up no dif- ferently for the local swim club as they continued their run of first and second place finishes in Colville over the weekend. With only 42 swimmers, the Aquanauts gave the hosts all they could handle and fin- ished 346 points back in sec- ond and 113 ahead of Trail. Coach Wendy Pilla said her squad was impressive. “We finished in second place with half as many kids as the first place team,” she said. “I think with what we had we did an excellent job.” Adam Kristian paced the team with his third gold medal of the year, while Mario Fehrenberg won gold for the second meet in a row. Justin Phillips also grabbed gold, while Justin Kanigan, Dan Fodor and Neil Jones col- lected silver and Chris Cook took bronze. The Robson River Otters came away from the meet empty-handed, but that didn’t bother coach Marie Seghers. “The swimmers did really well,” she said. “We had swim- mers who had never competed in an A meet before.” Seghers said the presence of clubs from Kelowna and Penticton affected the Otters, as they both had swimmers in divisions that were potential medal chances for her club. With that in mind, she said the Otters paid more attention to technique and method, something they will continue to do at the Aquanaut meet this weekend. “We're always looking for improvement,” she said. “This is a really good warm-up for the regionals.” As hosts, Pilla said the Aquanauts are geared up. “They’re really pumped and excited,” she said. “We'll have most our team here so we should do well.” COLVILLE VALLEY SWIM CLUB SWIM MEET JULY 11&12 - CASTLEGAR AQUANAUTS RESULTS Novice Boys: Matthew Roberts 25 free - 5th. Games, but they didn’t get the cigars. From Thursday to Sun- day, 69 local athletes, coach- es, chaperones, managers and officials were in and around Port Alberni doing their best for the city and their zone, the Kootenays. After all the medals had been handed out, Zone 1 sat seventh out of the eight zones, the same place they finished at the March Winter Games in Vernon. Of the 58 athletes repre- senting Castlegar and area, 33 of them ended up with a top .10 finish, including medals to six swimmers in the pool. Zone 1 swim coach Tom Carew said his squad faced some heavy opposition over on Vancouver Island. “The competition was pretty close,” he said. “There were 60 to 80 kids in every event.” The head coach of the Castlegar Aquanauts, Carew said the blink of an eye sepa- rated the pretenders from the contenders in qu “Tenths of seconds deter- mined whether you made the finals or you ended up in 20th,” he said. Aquanauts’ Teddy Hunter was the local leader in the pool, as he and fellow Aqua- nauts Rob Case, Jill Imrie and Averil Sheppard, along with Robson River Otter Tor- rie Lahue combined with physically challenged ath- letes to take gold in the 16 X 25 freestyle relay. Hunter then teamed with Aquanaut Brian Roberts and two swimmers from Nelson and Grand Forks to capture bronze in the boys 4 X 50 medley relay. His final glory in the pool came when he, Roberts and Aquanaut Grant Mosby, along with a Grand Forks swimmer, took fourth in the boys 4 X 50 freestyle relay. Carew said the some 15 hours the swimmers spent at the pool Friday and Saturday took their toll when Sunday’s relays rolled around. B.C.
