' Last week the twenty ninth such unit was installed in the Castlegar area since the program was introduced two years ago. - But there are twenty five more people on a waiting Ust, peopie with a medical need for one of the $535 units provided by the Home Support office on Columbia Avenue in South Castlegar. “We feel kind of helpless if people request the units and we don’t have any avai ” says doff. “A lot of people can now stay home. It allows people to stay home a little longer and feel at ease and to have these machines. The need is in the community.” Patti Richards, Home Support office manager, says the 25 peo- ple on the waiting list are “at risk” without the emergency units which — through a direct hook- up with the central monitoring unit at Trail hospital — will set off an emergency response proce- dure. “We have to get out the cry for funding,” noted Richards, The monitor unit in Trail can service 500 emergency response uel in the area. A similar service Lovette Nichvolodoff, administra- tor for the Castlegar and District Home Support Association. “Basically, if they're living alone they're at risk,” she said, noting that although many of the clients are elderly persons living on their own, the need for such a unit is dictated, as a rule, by a medical condition. Since the program was started in 1988, all of the 29 Skytec home units have been purchased with money from public donations, mostly from local service clubs and organizations, Selkirk Lions and the Legion, ided in the Trail area by et hospital. Nelson has its own monitor system, and Nichvolodoff said she understood that similar ser- vices are available in Creston and Grand Forks, The service works on a lease system, with the users required to pay a “minimum cost” of $25 a month. : The amount covers Home Sup- port expenses and the charges paid for the monitor services in Trail. In exchange, the units are serviced free of charge. Nichvolodoff said her office for example, are ina as to which will buy more units —— and so far they’ re running neck discourages Private Purchase of the The d of units is regulated by Home Ser- vices, through a means test to “who has a greater to neck in their The from the commu- nity groups was “just tremen- dous,""Nichvolodoff acknowledged. Another funding revenue, the Go B.C. Lotteries Fund, has made it possible for the Home Services to get one out of three new units for free. (The fund reimburses need,” she said. The machine unit works con- sists of a pendant worn around, the person’s neck and a stall portable console, whic}. mansmits messages to Trail hospital when activated.
