It would be hard for the Roseland Miner to tell the exact truth in report- ing any controversy Dan Corbin or his railroad might have with anyone else, unless it could be reported truthfully in Corbin’s favor. In Wednesda: ii of that paper in refering the decision in the case of the Nelson & Fort Sheppard railway vs. Parker, et al, concerning the title of the Quartz creek townsite said: “The injunction against Pa and others was sustained and the de ion of the court was against them on every point raised by the appeal.” The Victoria Colonist of Saturday, July 31st, in reportit.g the case said: “The Full court has given judgment in the appeal of Nelson & Fort. Shep- pard railway vs. Parker et al. The de- fendants staked off the townsite of Quartz creek, in West Kootenay, and plaintiffs began action for trespass avainst them, on the ground that the Jand in question formed part of the grant to the plaintiffs under authority of the legislature. Plaintiffs secured an interim injanction from Justice McColl Foweaininy ihe defendants from cast- on Plaintiffs’ title. Defendants thereupon moved be- fore Justice Walkem to dissolve the in- junction; instead of which, however, he inde a further order resiciv ‘ting plain- tiffs from applying for avrown grant to the property en site the hearing of the trial. Plai vealed against this restrictions and the ‘defendante by way of cross appeal, moved te dissolve that part of Justive Walkem’s order that did not dissolve Justice McColl’s order. The full court hus now given judgment to the effect that the court has no jurisdic- tion to restrain the company from = ap- plying for a crown grant. Argument on the cross appeal will be heard on a day.tu be fix it will be seen by the above that the Miner was far from the truth. The real questions st issue have not yet been tried. —_—_ As Mayor Scott was to be absent for only three weeke, he had aright to ex- pect his policy in reference to the city government carried out, so far ag his office was concerned. He evidently thought Alderman Fraser wai more apt to fill the office as the = himself. would fill it, und therefore indicated that it was his with to the council - before leaving, and had a right, to expect that Mr. Fraser would be chosen. It appears that th s ome di and that it will be settled at the next meeting of the council in accordance with.the mayor's expressed wish, and it ghould be. —_—— Fome of tie noperty owners in Rogs- lind ure tuo grasping. We have an in- stant in point. A landlord who is re- ny x vuUt 41.000 a munth rent raised the renton a tenant §¢10 per month which forced said tenant out. He ob- tained a lot five or six blocks from the bu 8 portion of town and built a shack in which to carry on his businces, If the property owners persist in this course, the time is not far distant when the sign “To Rent”? will adurn half the baildings on Columbia avenue. The Miner misses misrepresent Alderman George A. Fraser. It opposed his election ana saul that all other candidates were good and would in the event of election » good, faithful officials, It said should be beaten, He polled vote cast fur any candidate, is sure and is duing all and Mr. Fraser is y in allowing its per- thrusts to go unnoticed. Mr. opportunity tv it can to very sonal Fraser has the courage of his convic- |‘ tions and is making a goud official and the unfair attacks upon him by the Miner are doing him no harm with the WILL GIVE WORKING BONDS. From the south via Spokane, Washington, by the Spokane Falls & Northern and Columbia & Red Mountain railways, Rossland has thirty-five hotels, with bars, eating and lodging rvoms, and a dozen restaurants; and all are well patronized. There are four weekly news- papers and two dailies. All other branches of business are well represented. ‘The popula- tien is variously estimated from 6000 to 7500. Board and lodging at the ho- tels, $2 to $3 per day. Meals 25 to 50 cents. Furnished rooms, $3.50 to $7 per week. Itis useless to write and ask ifany particular business would pay here. Business men are fall- ing over each other to establish nearly every kind of enterprise, and allseem to be doing well. Everybody must be his own judge and take his own chances, While ene le tre is not work tor .all who iaquire, most sober, indus- tious persons who really wish to work have so far been able to obtain it. We would not advise any man to land here ‘‘broke” without friends, although many who have done 20 aredoing well, This camp is aot being estab- lished on the basis of a pay rol at present. ‘The populace is en™ gaged, notonly in working the mines and conducting the: busi- ness of the town, but are buying. or bonding and developing min- ing property; buying sod selling real estate; building houses for rental purposes, prospecting and staking prospectors, Many are here simply looking on in won- derment. We believe it will go on and on until Rossland can boast of a population of 50,000. After that it will probably settle down to a proposition of,a pay roll but not for four or five years. There are millions of money here from all sections of the globe; but the principal investors are from the United States, with Canada largely interested. The history of the camp reads like a fairy tale, and the fabalous riches are scarcely excelled by Oolong at 50 cents. O. M. FOX & CO. Columbia Ave.. near Lincoln St. JOHN M.
