8 f will !wry P• Well, I got in my first round on Friday of last week. Bart Dudley, Carl Osing and myself went out to Birchbank, where the course was in excellent condition for so early in the season and it was reasonably crowded. Gordie Fergusson was busy taking memberships and aMouncing the order on the first tee, selling buckets of balls for guys who wished to practice hitting before venturing on to the course. On number one we were joined by Bill Chartres of Trail, who was also making his first start and our scores, when we completed nine, were not that good but not that bad for a bunch of so-called sand-baggers. Bill had 49, Bart a 52, I a 53 and Carl 56. Triple bogies on one hole or another hurt all of us. It will be a while before our Upper layout gets out of the grips of winter. Maybe later this month! Thursday night of last week, we held our retirees' wind-up curling party at the Legion and it went off 1 quite well. A great roast beef supper was served, with all the trimmings, by the Legion ladies and we got down to the presentation of awards to the rinks who won the three events we held this past season. The Arnold VaMess rink; with Gil Besso third, Dick Vermiere second and newcomer Lou Freeman lead, took the trophy for the first competition, the ScottMolyneux award. The Legion trophy went to the Angus Popplewell rink, with Jack Hook in third spot, Dick Vermiere second and Leo Lawlis lead. This was for first place in our second competition. And in the third competition the club trophy went to the Bob Stevenson rink. Bob had Cleve Cowland at third, Larry Prough second and Chuck Harkness lead. After the presentation, Chuck was said to have remarked to someone, "Now, perhaps they will believe I'm a curler. That's two trophies this season I have my name on." The club recognized the rink that represented the club in the over-60 playdowns in Trail earlier in the season. Angus Popplewell, Russ Broughton, Cleve Cowland and Gil Besso were members of that foursome. The evening continued in a light vein with Jock Irvin and Clyde Nyman leading the way in the joke-telling department. Some 60 curlers were present for the festive event. While still on the subject, the Eagles held their AMual Northwest Bonspiel in Nelson March 24-25, with Aeries from Nelson, Trail, Kamloops, Calgary and Rossland taking part. Number 10 Aerie from Rossland was represented by the Jon Hohn rink with wife Gail, third and Dave and Frances Smith second and lead. This rink palced third in "B". Also along to represent number 10 was the Jack MacDonald rink. Eileen MacDonald was third. Tyrone and Mickie Laybourne and Gerard Stanton. In the Atom division, where Lou DeRosa and Doug Hickey were the coaches, Gary Westbury was thanked for his help during the season. Members of the White Knight team earning most improved and most sportsman-like citations were Michael McQueen and Noel Salsiccioli respectively. Turning to hockey, Rossland Minor Hockey Association held their wind-up banquet March 28, at the high school. It was a happy, if noisy, affair. A supper of spaghetti and meat balls was served by the team mothers assisted by Don Lenarduzzi. These kids, young and full of vim and what-have-you, really approved of this and made their thanks known to all.
