REED ‘ (May has been Seclared , Family Month in The ed s similar struggle in the outside. If } Toca! Ministerial has agreed to : give special emphasis to this theme throughout the month, S inthe pulpit, over the radio and + through newspaper. For the ext three weeks I am [this column with some of my ; colleagues. The following lines have been submitted by Rev. ; Desmond F. Carroll.] There are few who would {deny the relevance of the : family in our present society, : for each of us has existed at some time or another inside its bounds. Its influence changes in many ways as we grow from childhood into maturity but its significance is ever present. Out total dependence in child- hood merges into the struggles of the teenage years, which inevitably lead to the moving away stage as each member ‘seeks a new independence that ‘is part of- maturity. Humans grow only in rela- tion to one another, “No man is an island", and the family provides us with the testing ground as we seek to learn how to live in communities. The responsibilities that we accept, the tolerances that become part of us, the give and take of ordinary family life, are the threads that make up the fabric of society. That fabric may be weak or strong depend- ing upon the quality of the material that goes into its making. So any concern that we might have for the general trends in our community will most probably have some bear- ing on the quality of family life that is found there. Tf young people. find it difficult to find their place in the family they will probably re "do not find concern and care in their early years, how will they understand what it means tocare and love someone else? Baret If their early memories are made up of neglect, indifference and lack of. warmth how can they be expected to grow into mature people. In a Christian context the roots of the family are to be found in marriage and the promises made and the hopes expressed there are a foundation on which to build. Promises always have to be worked at, for they seldom come easily, and this realization is a helpful beginning. Marriag®s grow as the couples can understand the significance of forgiveness and this is no less true for the family. The eternal struggle is that of seeking to achieve “selflessness”, for in giving of ourselves we help each other to grow. What is important is that the family doesnot become an end in itself, for it is made up of individuals each with. their unique hopes, personalities and - weaknesses, We must try to bear each others burdens in all aspects of ‘ life, and the family circle is a good plare to. discover this responsibility. ~ Thought for the month: Parents: Get a copy of the marriage vows you exchanged and reread them. Whole family: Try to have one family meal each day with everybody present, as it is a good chance to share, Intake Beyond Need:. Cause of Weight Gain The causes of undesirable weight gain vary with the individual, but all have one thing in common—food. ‘The basic cause of over- weight is an intake of food calories in excess of one’s need, Most cases of obesity show a pattern of irregular food intake with a liking for fat and sugar- rich items. z A change to regular meals and no snacks is the first step in the prevention or treatment of this problem. The selection of proper foods: in suitable amounts is essential, For example: a medium- sized potato is 100 calories, but a_serving of butter or gravy may raise it to 200; a slice of whole wheat bread is 65 ‘calories, but even a thin pat of butter may. add another 65;.a fresh apple is 75 calories, but made into an apple pie, a serving is 350; a 10-ounce glass of whole milk is 200 calories, but served as chocolate malted milk it is 600, The only weight-control formula that can succeed is one that gives consistent attention from day to day to the choice of the right kind and amount of food eaten.
