C2 Cas ILEGAR NEWS, September 19, 1979 Record Tracks by George Gammon THE KNACK: Get The Knack Got The Knack, Knuke The Knack, Knock The Knack. i For those of you who are ante with The Knack, ibly because you haven't it tened toa radio for the last fqw months, or you've been living in a cave, The Knack is the latest in the new wave rock army that has been as- sulting the market for the last few years, Get The Knack is the title of their first album, which illustrates they are not your typical new wave band. The photo on the back of the album jacket is such an obvious takeoff on the early Beatles that it might turn off for an audience offensive, considering the success of the ploy which has been capital- ized on from The Stones to the Sex Pistols. True, The Knack does build their music around the style created by the Beatles, but they emulate other early English bands including The Hollies, and do an absolute tongue-in-cheek Buddy Holly number, Heart- beat, in which the only short- coming is the Holly-like arti- culations. The music on the album is a definite throwback to the beginnings of the British invasion, — sharp driving Well, it’s another summer shot | Man, it’s good to get back to work after a long, hot, wet, cold, dry summer. A good many teachers, with a long summer holiday, do something exciting, inter- esting, or at least construc- tive, Some go on exotic trips to faraway places, and return to bore you with their experi- ences for the next ten. months. Others go to the Stratford Festival, or take a course in Potting pottery, or go on a long boat trip in their own) boat, or have an affair, or make fifty gallons of peach wine, or grow a beard. Still others build a patio, or tear down a barn, or take a summer course to improve their or rock without the d special effects or burdening heavy metal that usually makes any lyric gratefully There's many a buyer who isn't interested in hear- ing a feeble copy of an un- copiable original. The stage setup, the'clothes, and the resemblance of leader Doug Fieger to John Lennon's familiar bow-legged stance at the microphone is little short of outlandish hype. Knuke The Knack is an attempt by San Franciscan artist, Hugh Brown, to cap- italize on the promo hype, and make a few bucks off the Los Angeles band that has begun to reach inter- national prominence. Brown created and distributes Knuke The Knack T-shirts, which he claims is a personal protest of the band’s simu- lation of the Beatles, and The Knack's seemingly contemp- tuous attitude to its audi- ences when it performs. It seems a little odd Brown would find contempt where the simularity with the early bands end, as The Knack incorporate the free- dom of lyrical Prepare their courses for the fall term. Or something equally dull. Every year, it’s the same thing with me, I make great plans for the summer, around the middle of June, Write a book, go to the Yukon or d, re- granted performers today to get their point across without having to rely on innuendoes. Critics may feel that that alone shows lack of ingenu- ity, but ‘the direct message complements the direct rock and roll of which Good Girls Don't and Frustrated provide perfect examples. The second side of the album is clearly the best, -kicking off with the pounding My Sharona, and demon- strates Fieger's excellent feel for melody with Lucinda. Sharona pulsates with down- to-earth, good old rock and roll, and while some may try to Knuke the Knack and Knock the Knack, the major- ity dre going to GET The 352-3000 ‘Over-the-road’ rigs feature of truck show Spokane's fifth annual Truck and Road Show will be held at the Interstate Fair- , grounds Sept. 29 and 30. And this summer, as so often, I accomplished abso-- lutely zilch. I barely got my weekly col- umn written. I travelled no more than 120 miles from shome. I re-visited nothing ex-, cept the town library. The only affair I’ve had was with a big cedar chair in my back yard. I’m clean-shaven and short-haired. 1 caught one nine-inch bass, I did shoot a par in golf. On one hole. I'll have to admit what my wife suggested every second day all summer, “You're a lazy bum."* Well, we're not all perfect. I did get quite a few meals, Peanut butter sandwich and Bill Smiley ¥ steak gravy. It came out looking like the inner side of a diaper, and nobody could * eat the steak, One other memorable meal was a stew I made. The usual stuff — onions, car- rots, meat, a couple of spuds, It tasted a little flat, so hit the spice cupboard and chucked in a few shots of everything but mustard, then squirted in about half a bottle of reek Had poe sauce, That steak had bi and a je ne sais quoi that 1 ay old lady tried to figure out for days. Aside from the cooking, there wasn't much to do, For . various and sundry reasons, too miscellaneous to list, we weren’t able to do any of the things we'd planned. Maybe that’s why we wound up with a phone bill nudging the $200 mark, Per month. A sick brother, the col- onel, in hospital in Montreal, flown out from James Bay after a collapse. Not any help was me with a fat, arth- titic foot when my wife was fit, and she with some kind of horrible sore back when my foot was fit. Ie didn’t help that the lawnmower. went on the blink, and I flatly refused to take it back to the robber who charged me $55.00 to get it going last time. ‘Let the dam’ grass grow. I had a serious chat with my tickets, baggage getting a piano crated, trying to dispose of a car that won’t start, and coping with a hun- dred other problems. Jolly good for her. The support of the as- sociation is based on both the regional importance of Whitewater Ski Area and its growing significance in the tourist economy in the re- fon. Denny Edgar, the as- sociation's manager, said the support is valid because of the role Whitewater plays in overall amateur sport fitness programs regionally, and as one of the region's major ski areas, along with Red Moun- tain, which attract visitors from the Prairies and United States, Regarding the tourism economy, he states, “As early as 1976, a marketing pro- gram was developed to prom- ote regional ski packages. dofinitoly be affected.” Many visitors are at- tracted to the region because of Whitewater, Red Moun- tain, heli-skling, and snow-cat* akling, while restaurants, ho- _ tels, retail shops, services, and jobs are dependent for part of the year on ski areas operating. “ Kootenay Boundary Vis- itors’ Association also rec- ognizes that much of White- water's current financial problem arose after the in- stallation of a third lift and major slope improvements, followed closely by a severe lack of snow in the 1978-79 season.
