medical

An extension of benefits
for qualified B.C. residents
when they require hospital
eare in another province was
announced last week by the
Hon. K. Rafe Mair, minister
of health.

Starting April 1, the
provincial government will
cover costs for day-care
surgery and visits to the
emergency department of a
hospital. Under the previous
policy, a person receiving
either service in another
province was personally res-
ponsible for payment.

Services provided by
hospital emergency depart-
ments include treatment for
such conditions as burns,
sprains, fractures, accidental
poisoning, and so on.

Day-care surgery in-
cludes any surgical pro-
cedure where the patient re-
quires all the services of an
operating room, but is able to
leave the hospital a few hours
after surgery.

The new out-of-province
benefits will be available to
qualified B.C. residents on
the same basis as if they
were being treated in a
hospital in this province.
That is, the patient will pay
the normal charge of $2 for
each visit.
