Is it Moonie madness?

VANCOUVER (CP) —
Critics would say they suffer
from Moon madness, but for
Mark and Christine Erickson
the Unification Church was
all sunshine,

Christine was one of the
first Moonies recruited in
Canada and she founded the
church in Toronto. Mark be-
came the Mississippi’ direc-
tor, and both later became
Moonie missionaries in for-
eign lands,

They have since ‘left the
Unification Church as active
members, but both say the
Moonie experience was the
best thing that could have

‘of happened to them.

Tn an ‘interview at- their

said the quit the church as
active members because they
were tired of “living out of a
suitcase” as missionairies.

But they said there was no
attempt made ‘to prevent
‘them from leaving and they
said they are not aware of
any attempts made to pre-
vent others from leaving.

“T still haven't found any-

said Christine.

She said critics of the
movement twist-the truth to
their own purposes.

‘The couple compared mem-
bers of the movement who
beg on the street with a nuns
or monks from other re-
ligions. And they said the
often-heard charge that new
recruits are brainwashed is
false.

have joined to want you to
join,” said Christine. “But if
you go to an Amway meet-
ing, you'll get the same
thing."

Mark said there is no truth

to the charge that the Uni-
fication Church prevents
members from seeing their
families, He said some fam-
ilies get so upset at the
thought of a member. joining
the movement that they
overreact to the point where
the member fears seeing
them.

APPROVAL NOT NEEDED

He added that everyone
should be given the right to
follow his own path in life,
even to the extent that he
follow a religion which does
not meet with the under-
standing or aie of
others.

mother was scared to death

that I was going to become a
nun.”

The couple met in Korea in
1975. Reverend Sun Moon,
leader of the movement,
thought they would make a
good couple and asked them
to talk it over.

They were later married in
a ceremony in which 1,800
couples were wed.

“He (Moon) was trying to
make the statement that we
are family orientated and
that we are something new to
look at,” said Mark of the
large wedding ceremony.

“It wasa sales technique as
much as anything.”
