BORROWING

It may sound like a good idea at the time. But when
your mutual fund salesman suggests you consider
borrowing money in order to buy into his fund, think
twice before doing so.

With the stock market booming, mutual funds are
enjoying record popularity. They allow the person of
ordinary means and little knowledge of the stock market
to ride along with a profe

Tew mutual fund investors are complaining these
days. However, when the market goes down — and all
parties must end at some point — those who have
borrowed to get into mutual funds may find themselves in
a sudden squeeze. The investment they bought may
suddenly be worth a lot less than what they dwe.

Although figures aren't in yet, the Investment Funds
Institute of Canada expects mutual fund sales in the first
quarter of this year to reach $2 billion. That's more than
the total sales for all of 1984.

MANY BORROWING

Both Keith Douglas, president of the institute, and
John Leybourne, deputy director of enforcement of the
Ontario Securities Commission, believe the sales have
been swollen because many people are willling to borrow
to make their investments.

Some members of the industry have estimated that
as much as 20 per cent of mutual fund sales are being
made with borrowed money.

Leybourne has issued a circular warning average
investors to think twice about borrowing to buy mutual
funds, and Douglas, whose organization represents 170
mutual funds and 85 per cent of the industry, is working
en a tougher industry code.

“We're not saying it's a bad thing to do,”
Leybourne. “We're just saying ‘Be careful.’

Borrowing to profit from investments is a recognized
part of the financial world. It's called leveraging, and the
tax department will let you deduct the interest on most
types of loans for investment. Buy as-Leybourne and
Douglas point out, you had better know what you are
doing.

“When the market is down, then you lever,” says
Dougias. “When the market is up! you generally don't —
and a lot of people don't seem to know that.”

Says Leybourne: “Lenders have been making
investment loans easier to get lately. Some are even
giving loans for 100 per cent of the investment on the
strength of a signature alone, and we are concerned that
inexperienced investors could lose a lot of money
through these types of loans.”

HERE'S EXAMPLE

Here's what can happen:

Say you borrowed 80 per cent of the money to buy
$1,000 worth of mutual fund units. Over the long term
mutual funds are often good investments, but stock
market shares can drop in value for short periods. A few
months after the purchase, the investment may be worth

“The investor's original 20-per-cent interest in the
investment would be wiped out and the lender would be
sure to demand that the loan be paid down by at least a
few hundred dollars,” Leybourne says.

“Investors who have borrowed thousands of dollars
can face disaster. If you can't pay, then they'll sell you out
and you'll lose your investment.”

Leybourne is expecting a barrage of complaints from
borrowers once the current market boom dies. “For once,
we are telling people in advance what can happen, but
we'll still get calls,” he says.

important consumer seg:

watch: the mature market —
people 55 and older; the baby
boom — the biggest and most
influential generation in
North America; and teen-
agers and young adults — the
consumers of tomorrow.

a microwave oven.
