‘Pulpit & Pew By Pastor SLAWOMIR MALAREK Seventh-day Adventist Church We are told in the Bible that God is slow to anger, and of great kindness (Jonah 4:2) and that He delights in mercy (Micah 7:18), We are told that God is love (1 John 4:8) and that He doesn’t find pleasure in the death of the wicked (Ez. 18:23; 2 Pet.3:9). But we are also told of His anger, His wrath, and His punishments. In- surance companies classify natural disasters as *‘acts of God."’ You can feepen_your love for God of - It all depends on whether & not it is taken out of context. This pleases God’s enemy, Satan! You often hear quoted at funerals, “The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the-Lord”' Job. 1:21. God does not take anything away. Rather, the Lord gives, and Satan takes away The problem comes when we assume that every single verse in the Bible truly reflects God. Rather, the Bible is a collection of stories about people just like us and their relation- ships with God. Some Bible verses in- chudemisconceptions that those people had about God — such as the one about God taking things away from us. That was only one depressed per- son’s opinion. If you redd the whole story,-you learn that God didn’t take anything away from Job — Satan did (Job 2:7). How pleased Satan is when we believe his lies and get angry at God. That’s why Jesus had to come to this earth to correct these views (John 14:7). It _was_a prevalent understan- ding of the people of His day that if something bad-had happened to you it was because God was punishing you for the sin of your life. A classic example of this miscon. ception we find in John, Chapter 9, where Jesus-meets-a-blind man. Im- mediately the disciples ask: “‘Who did sin, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?’ Jesus answers, “‘Neither.”* The Bible clearly teaches that God is not now in the business of punishing the sinners. ‘‘He hath ap- pointed a day, in which he will judge the world’ (Acts 17:31) but mean- while ‘‘He maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust’’ (Matt. 5:45). So, why do we suffer? Suffering is the result of sin and destruction — the work of Sai not of God. We are sinners too and we often suffer the results of our own selfishness, we reap what we sow — it’s a simple law of cause and effect. We cannot blame anyone for the famine in Ethiopia, it’ known fact that it was preven- table, But many ask, ‘“‘Why does God allow it?’ Sin began in heaven in the rebellion of Lucifer, now known as Satan; God could have destroyed Satan straight away but as-a result many angelic and human beings would have been afraid of God. Instead, in His wisdom God allowed this earth to become a theatre, or-stage, upon which there would be demonstrated to the univer- sity these-great-facts: What the true character of Satan is and that the wage of sin is death and that God is a God of love. The universe looks on, and what do they see? They see suffering and hear- tache. This is what sin does. The universe also sees God, our heavenly Father, pour out His blessings upon. the just and the unjust. They see His love in a multitude of ways. Can we then, accuse God of turning us into ‘‘guinea pigs?’’ No, because in this whole spectacle we have a choice to demonstrate what sin does in the human heart or to show what the love of God will do in contrast. And also because God said, ‘‘! know it is going to take-a lot-of suf- fering to complete this demon stration, but I will not ask man to go through anything that | will not go through myself."” So God Himself, in Christ, came into the world to suffer with man and to die for man and to give man the opportunity of sharing with Him in the demonstration. Here is where the cross of Christ becomes meaningful. Tf you are going through suffering right now, remember it isn't God-who is punishing-you-and-who inflicts the pain. Remember also that He suffers with you and that He will use this suf- fering for something much better. He cannot intervene every time we suffer in this sinful world; it would be like trying to patch another leak in an old bucket. God is working on getting rid of sin altogether-and soon Jesus will come to establish His eternal kingdom. Race organizers need cash quick The push is on to raise the final $5,000 needed to run the quarter-mile drag boat races for Sunfest 1990, the Castlegar Festivals Society announced in a news release. ““We have until Friday, April-27 to raise the last of the money needed for the races,”’ said race chairman Craig Burton. ‘‘We have to let the Fraser Valley Drag Boat Association know by that date whether the race is on.’” The drag boat have been S fest’s major drawing card for the last two years_and it-is-a-free-event to the public. In 1989 there were more than 6,000 people watching this event held at the Robson townsite. “There are a lot of people counting on us being able to bring the races back here,"’ said Ross Hawse, society president “We have done a lot of fund- raising and have some corporate sponsors lined up. All we need now is the last $5,000 and we'll have enough We are confident that the people and businesses in Castlegar and area want to host the quarter-mile drag boat races and will support us in our drive to bring them back,’’ he said. The society hopes that by April 27, all the money will be raised and they can make the announcement that the race is on. Last year a Canadian record was set in the unlimited class and the drag-boat racers are anxious to return and set another record, the release says. “The water here is great_for the boats and they (the racer) all’com- mented on the great hospitality they received last year,’’ Burton said The society has been working since September lining up corporate spon- sors for the races and has been fairly successful, Hawse said. ‘‘All we need is the last of the money and the races can be confirmed,” he said Donations to the festivals society drag boat races can be made at the Castlegar Savings Credit Union across from the Castleaird Plaza. “*We'll take private donations, business donations, and even cor- porate donations,”’ Hawse said. “*It doesn’t matter if the amount is $25 or $250, it all adds up and-means that_we can-continue to offer_this ex- citing free event as part of Sunfest 90,"* he concluded.
