VANCOUVER (CP) — Children are wearing jump- suits, T-shirts, jackets, com. bat pants, shorts and peaked hats — all in the comovflage pattern and styles worn by United States marines in Vietnam and Central Amer. ica. “As a mother of three chil dren, I'm really disturbed by it,” says Susan Hargraves, a graduate student in educa. tional psychology at Simon Fraser University. “I've ob- served boys dressed in cam ouflage playing at my son's after-school day care and at the housing co-op where we live. They fantasize about war and pretend they are soldiers.” The clothing is planting subtle seeds in children's minds that will make war seem acceptable, she says. But an expert in popular culture says it's just another fashion trend. Martin Laba, a communi- cations professor at Simon Fraser University, says the trend began when the rock band The Clash wore camou- flage as a political statement inst U.S. military policy in Central America. BEGAN AS SYMBOL The popularity of the cloth- ing shows how a symbol starts out with a certain sig- nificance, but loses meaning once it is appropriated by the rest of society, he says. “It's not a fascination with military things or a symptom of increased in so- ciety — absolutely not,” says Laba. He says it is an example of the “moral panic” that has been around since rock and roll music — the feeling of adults that chil- dren's morals willbe nega- tively affected by popular trends. Some parents refuse to buy the clothes — made small . enough to fit a two-year-old — because of its connotations of war. And store clerks say those parents who do buy it often tell them they dislike the clothes but are buying Trainees Needed to train for positions as © Medical Receptionist © Practical Bookkeeping ¢ Hotel/Motel Management them because the child wants them. Ari Feder, 12, says he wears camouflage because it's the style. For him, the trend started with Mr. T. in the popular television show, The A-Team, in which Mr. T plays a Vietnam war veteran as a modern-day guerrilla who fights evil. Ari's proud of the fact his shirt is “a replica of genuine army stock,” but says he doesn't play war. Bill Tombrink cringed when he saw the camouflage outfit displayed on a steal- thily erouching model in Woodward's boys’ wear.
