sortium has received federal support
for a $5.7-million research effort to
manufacture a superconducting wire

The National Research Council
said it will contribute technical assis

Hydro-Quebec, Atomic Energy~ of
Canada Ltd. and Canada Wire and
Cable Ltd.

“It's such a key technology that we
really don’t have any choice but to
pay or dues and learn what's got to
be learned," said Brad Palmer, a sci
entist with Atomic Energy of Canada

Enormous economic benefits await
the first countries that_produce com
mercial superconductors, he said.

Such products may be used for
efficient power-transmission lines,
extremely fast computers, or for
storing 4arge amounts of electricity

“The total number _of potential
applications is phenomenal," said
Palmer. “‘It's very clear that this
technology. if it can be made prac:
tical, will have profound implications
throughout society.”’

Physicists have long known about
superconductivity, the ability’ of a
material to lose almost all resistance
to electricity when its temperature is
close to absolute zero.

NEW CLASS

In the last two years, scientists
Rave discovered a new class of super
conductors which work ‘at higher
temperatures. This has led to a
global race to produce materials that
can be used commercially

They are referred to as high-tem
perature superconductors but these
materials still must be chilled to
temperatures colder than most
peéple would care to experience —
about 100 Kelvin
