July 30, 1989 =? SPORTS COMMUNITY NEWS sy July 30, 1989 CastléBar News 83 Loss of veterans may set back Habs By BILL BEACON The Canadian Press Bob Gainey is now a Squirrel, Larry Robinson a King. But no one’s quite sure what the Montreal Canadiens will be without them The last of Serge Savard’s teammates from the 1970s Canadiens have left the team in the past 10 days, taking 33 years of experience and leadership with them Gainey retired to become a player-coach with the Epinal Ecureuils (Squirrels) in France and free agent Robinson signed with the Los Angeles Kings It’s now up to the team Savard has built since becoming general manager in 1983 to find new leaders from the likes of Guy Carbonneau, RyanWalter, Craig Ludwig and Chris Chelios. The last links with the team that dominated the National Hockey League a decade ago are gone Gilles Tremblay, a Canadian from the 1960s who now is a broadcaster, feels the loss of both veterans will *‘set back Montreal's march to the Stanley Cup by a couple of years.”* The team amassed 113 points this past season, yet lost to Calgary in the Stanley Cup final. Now the two men who knew best how to clear that last hurdle and return the Cup to the Forum are gone. A big job for Savard will be to sign Rick Green, 33, an often-injured defenceman who has hinted strongly at retirement. Green and Robinson were stabilizing forces on Montreal’s top-rated defence. “The Canadiens simply cannot lose two defen. cemen of this quality without a decline, Pierre Ladouceur of Montreal's La Presse Without Green, Ludwig would be the only defen * says columnist sive defenceman on the team. Goaltenders Patrick Roy and Brian Hayward could forget about a fourth straight Jennings Trophy as the league's best tandem in terms of goals surrendered The Canadiens have a pack of talented young defencemen. Eric Desjardins won a regular job last season while Jyrki Lumme, Mathieu Schneider and Sylvain Lefebvre will fight for Robinson's job. Lumme, a big Finn who can hit and handle the puck, holds the in. side track Six-foot-three left winger Mark Pederson, a 40- goal scorer with the Sherbrooke Canadiens, isa likely choice to take Gainey’s place. The Canadiens also have centre Stephen Lebeau, who set the AHL scoring record last season, and centre Andrew Cassels, star of the junior Ouawa 675, banging on the door HEIGHTENS INTEREST With all the new talent, there has not been so much anticipation surrounding a Canadiens’ training camp since the 1970s, which may be why Savard did not seem upset or saddened when his old friends decided to ply their trade elsewhere **It would have been much worse if they had left three years ago, "’ Savard said repeatedly this week Public reaction has been much the same. People have expected Gainey, 35, and Robionson, 38, to retire for so long that they only smiled and wished them luck when they decided to move on The anxiety will only come if Green joins the exodus “‘L hope they don’t all go at once because then I would be the oldest guy on the team,"’ says Montreal centre Bobby Smith.
