The Late Joseph Kelly Shipped There for The late Joseph Kelly, the miner from the Velvet, who died at the Sieter’s hos- pital last Tuesday, of heart trouble, and whose body hasbeen lying in state at _the undertaking parlors of W. R. Beat- ty, was removed to the Masonic hall this mornitig at 10 o’clock and after the performing of the apecial last-rites of the order, of which the deceased wasa mem- ber,. the remains were then coveyed to the Red Mountain depot, accompanied by.anvescort of Masons. + * At the depot Wm. All are invited to these special services. Captain Jack Ryan was in today from the Abe Linccln' and reports splendid progress at the mine, with a most flat- tering showing in the new drift. Beginning with the new school term there were enrolled, upon. the books of different schools of the city the names 24 new and additional scholara, ~ These new pupils are the children of families recently arrived in the city from differ- ent parts of the United States and East- ern Canada. ‘The. school rooms and classes are at present very much crowd- ed and it is hoped some additional rooming space will soon be available for. the accommodation of the crowded pu: pile and teachers. * Police Court. William McCormick, who was charged with obtaining money under false pre- tenses, was given four months at hard labor in the Nelson jail. Fred Grant was up, charged with mak- ing a living .by gambling, and his case was renanded until the 10th. Horse. * The double compartment shaft is be- ing sunk as fast as possible. The new compressor works like a charm, and Mr. Pfunder is highly pleased with tne show- ing. Nothing new is reported in the way of strikes. Giant. This week the old shaft was pumped out and sinking begun in itagain. ‘Noth- ing new has been struck yet. Itis the intention to,continte sinking the shaft to the 160-foot level. The showing in the upper crosscut is very goud. * Iron Mask. . {his property has had many successes during the weék. However, the general average of the ore now being mined is considerably better than in the past, andthe prospects are bright for property. : Commander. Sinking continues in the shaft which is now down 316 feet. THE TANK HOLDS 170,000 GALLONS No Water Running in, and the Flume Is Frozen Up Solid. 1 Joseph Squires, chief of the fire de- partment, visited the tanks and in- spected the flume this morning, and re- ports the lower tank just above town full of water, the upper tank empty and both flumes frozen up selid. He ex- presses the belief that there will be no water for domestic use until the spring thaw. He saya there is plenty of water for the useof the fire department in case of fire. ‘The lower reservoir. holds 170,000 im- perial gallons, and according to Chief Squires’ report is now full. The chemical engine is kept in readi- ness for immediate use. The people who have complained of having to melt snow will probably get used to it before spring. Yeal, returned home to Northport today. John R. Revis was an outgoing pas- senger on the noon train. Bishop Donlenville, of New Westmin- ster, who has been visiting Father Riv- ers, of this Parish, left for home on the. noon train, Oharles Parker, M. E. left today for Ymir on mining business. Sinking goes steadily on and a full compliment of men is being worked in tbe shaft, no now developments are re- ported and the ledge will be cat for from the 600 foot level, by’ a big drift.
