CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, August 14, 1975 "Famed Elgar Choir Founder Passes Away in Vancouver Charles E. Findlater, 82, of ‘West Vancouver, founder and director of the famed Elgar Choir of British Columbia, died last Thursday at Vancouver General Hospital, inent music teacher in Vancouver since 1918, Mr. Findlater foundéd the Wesley Sunday School Choir in 1924, The choral group's name was changed in 1936 ‘to honor Engh composer Sir Edward More than 6,000 young British Columbians were mem- hers of various Elgar choirs over a period of 61 years. Following tara of Be Cc. during the twenties and early thirties, the choir gained inter- national recognition with its ° appearance at the 1964 Chicago World's Fair, During depression years the group became known as the “trying pan choir" because of the spartan meal budget they operated on in their tourist coach train travels. The first of 19 overseas tours was undertaken in 1998, “During this visit to the U.K. the choir won top honors at the Welsh Eisteddfod Festival, the first of countless musical festi- val awards the choira received over the years, Various Elgar choirs ‘crossed Ca in 1941 and Very much a family affair, the cholr’s activities were as alsted greatly by the late Mra. Findlater prede- ceased her husband April 14, 3, Although Mr, Findlater taught voice and planoforte to private atudents and was en- gaged professionally by various schools, his work with the Elgar Choir was completely voluntary. Funds raised at overseas concerts were given to local charities, including those of the Red Cross, Rotary and other organizations, Two notable reunions were held to mark the 40th and 50th anniversaries of the choir's founding.
