The lovable but ugly alien and television's glamorous villainess have the same makeup artist. For the last 25 years, Bob Sidell has enhanced the beauty of such Hollywood glamor queens as Collins and Linda Evans on the set of Dynasty and Kathleen Turner in the film Body Heat. He also has helped create the outerworldly homeliness of E.T., and “most of the blood and guts on the movie MASH.” Sidell says Collins, 52, is “exacting” to work with. “She has a preconceived idea of exactly the way she looks and the way she should look that she developed years ago,” he says. “[ can't fault her for that, it works for her, but it requires a lot to maintain that look.” COMMON SENSE Sidell, in Toronto to do cosmetic demonstrations for a drugstore chain, says he uses the same common-sense approach to making up the stars as he does for ordinary folk. “Rule No, 1 is to keep it clean and keep it moist,” says Sidell. Before selecting cosmetics, he suggests a person sit in front of a mirror and “objectively” scrutinize the planes and shape of the face. “If you can be honestly objective about the good and bad points, you're 70 per cent on your way to looking For instance, someone with a square jaw can create the illusion of roundness by using a darker shade of rouge on the rear sections of the jaw, while using highlighter on the chin to make it appear longer. Daytime makeup should be soft and subtle, he says. “You don’t want to see the color, you want to see the result of that color. If someone comes in and compliments you on your makeup, that’s bad. It means they're not looking at you but at your makeup.” Sidell advocates neutrals for daytime — brown, black and taupe eye pencil, black or brown mascara and light, subtle eye di that the eyes. Splashes of color are saved for the evening to create a dramatic effect and to co-ordinate with clothes. " For lips, Sidell suggests outlining first with a lip pencil. Then he strokes on the primary color, highlights with a lighter shade in a pearl finish — brushed only on the centre portion of the upper and lower lips — and adds clear gloss. For those who suffer from “railroad tracks” — in which the color bleeds beyond the lip line — he suggests dabbing on loose powder and blotting the lips before applying gloss. For Sidell, the focal point of the face is the eyes. He starts with a dark color — usually an eye pencil — to deepen the shadow in the crease, which is blended up and out at the outside corner. Highlighter, in the form of a light-colored creamy powder, is concentrated on the inside corner of the eye, then brushed out thinly over the rest of the lid. Sidell then brushes on lid color, starting at the lash line about the mid-point of the iris and applying at a 45-degree angle upward and outward. Finally, a third color, in a light neutral, is brushed on the brow bone to highlight and make the eyes appear bigger. Mascara is stroked in both top and bottom surfaces of upper lashes, while lower lashes get only a top coating. metres, their green chutes puffing open as they- floated down at a speed of six metres a second. UNIT TOUGH The air-drop was part of exercise Lightning Strike 87, designed to prove that their outfit, the Special Service Force based at Petawawa, Cape Dyer, which in a war game scenario had been taken over by Soviet infil trators, was to witness a feat of bravery by every manwho - jumped, Pathfinder or regu- lar SSF trooper. While other units would be sent abroad in times of crisis, the mandate of the SSF is the defence of Canadian soil. ‘That's no mean feat, consid- ering the 10 million square kilometres — much of which is permafrost — that make up this country. Of the 3,300 members of the SSF, the elite are the few dozen Pathfinders. Operating in small, intensely trained teams, they go in advance of main forces for reconnaisance patrols and to secure areas for parachute assaults. They know how to live off the land and how to fend off the cold. On this trip, tem- peratures hung below -40 and there was very little shelter at this outpost north of the Arctic Circle. ‘TOUGHEST OF ALL Other units in the armed forced may argue the asser- tion of SSF members that they are the toughest in the fuel and rations on pallets that floated serenely down under green shrouds. Then the troops came down, landing and rolling gracefully in the deep snow. Quickly. they stuffed their chytes into bags and checked fér injuries among their mates. Over all of this the trooper wears a white nylon shell for camouflage, with a taped-on white cover over the helmet and a white balaclava. One trooper surprised two reporters by pulling off his balaclava to reveal a shock of white hair.
