The morning paper is delivered when the reading members of the family are busy, and they can only hastily glance over the paper, when they must goto their work, It is not until evening that they can give it attention. The afternoon paper is delivered in the homes about the time that the day’s work is done and when all the members of the family have the time and the inclination to read it. ‘They can readily see that the news which it con‘ains is of that day and not of the day before. : When this feature of the situation to the busi man, he can at once see that the evening paper is the better advertis- ing mediym. PRODUGE 100 TONS DAILY Tramway, Now in Course of Oonstruotion to Send the Ore Down to Red Mountain Side- track—Getting Properties in Shape to Com- menos. The No. 1 and thé Josie will at once join the list of shipping mines. Work has already eemmenced build- ing a new tramway for delivering their. ore to the Red Mountain tracks, and as,soon as it is ir shape the mines will each commence out- putting about 50 tons daily. The ore will go to the Northport smelter. The developments in the two claims have proceeded so quietly that little has been known regard- ing the big reserves which are now in sight. Nevertheless the mines are now in shape to go steadily ahead with shipments. The vertical shalt in the No. 1 is down 4o0o feet, and at the 200- and the 300-foot level a big ore chute four feet wide has been opened. Thus tar the development of the property has ptovenit to be 300 feet long and its farther extent is unknown. ‘Drifting to catch the vein is now in progress at the 400- foot level, and meanwhile Mothing is known as'to the ahowiie at that tically nothing except to get ready for shipping. .The main shaft is down 500 feet and is now being overhauled thoroughly. to “get it ready for the new electric -hoist will. have railway facilities this fall. Probably no line built in the last decade has cost so much as has. the system from Robson’ west, and cer- tainly few ‘roads in the, world pre- sented equal difficulties in construc- tion. The building of the Caradian Pacific down the Fraser river may have cost as much, but labor, and supplies were. much higher then, and the real work of building it was no ‘greater than the task of crossing the Gold range between Arrow lake and Christina lake. The average cost of the present system has, been $30,000 per mile, As the British Amer- Jor. $3,007,200 for the.ent're road, In holds the lion’s: places it has exceeded that average share of the Le Roi stock, the par- ent company itself should be able to make a big cash distribution to its shareholders on the strength of the immensely. For two miles along McRae creek, just west of the sum- mit, the roadbed is cut almost en- tirely out of a solid rock bluff, which had to be blasted away for a height of 50 or 60 feet in order to make room forthe track. The cost of that section was $200,000, or $100,000 per mile. The main tunnel at the head of Dog creek will prebably be cut through by the first of the year. At present the divide there is crossed on each side by a series of five switchbacks. The cost of driving the tunnelsis a surprise to most mining men. The huge holes, 18 feet high and 12° feet wide, have cost only $48 a foot: | Cheap labor and the size of the tunnels-have cut down the price of the work to the minimum. The roadbed is one of the finest in the west and although it has been operated only 10 days it is as smooth as many a lire as many years old. The trip o over it is well ties is well known in : Trail, and if worth taking. which is dat any time. The development of the mine has been practically confined to ‘the 300-foot level, where much work has been done with excellent results. Stations are cut at the 400- and the 500-foot level, and drifting there will com- mence as soon as the new hoist is. in place. to carry the ore from the two mines to the railway, and perhaps six weeks will be needed to complete it. The entrance of the-No. 1 and! the Josie to ‘the shipping list will give nine producing mines to Ross- land. The. others are the Le Roi, the War Eagle, the Centre Star, the I. X.
