A8 ss castiecar news, June 24, 1981 Officially opens Cominco's new gallium ar- senide production plant: was officially opened last ‘Thurs-° day by Dr. P.L.. McGeéer, B.C.'s minister of univer- sities, science and communi- cations. Dr, McGeer presided over the pulling of a gallium ar- senide crystal from newly: installed erystal-growing equipment with Cominco's A.V. Marcolin, group vice- president in Trail. The end product from the crystal is polished wafers of the semi- conductor compound, which are sold to manufacturers of electronic devices, The gallium arsenide plant is the newest unit in Comin- co's electronic materials op- eration at Trail. This high technology manufacturing group now employs 90 people and produces more than 200 specialized materials used in the manufacture of industrial and commercial electronic equipment. ‘The key equipment in the gallium arsenide’ plant is a’ highly automated — erystal- growing furnace. Gallium and arsenic metal refined at Trail to better than 99.9999 per . cent purity are placed in the growing chamber, which op- erates at high pressure and temperature, The metals form the gal- lium arsenide compound, and in a period of about 86 hours a crystal is grown from the melt. The crystals are two-to- * three inches in diameter, and up to 20 inches in length. Each crystal is evaluated to ensure that it meets the required specification. An automatic saw then slices the erystal into wafers half a millimeter in thickness. The wafers are polished to a mir- ror finish and after final inspection the wafers are packaged under clean-room ‘conditions. and shipped to customers, The plant will employ 12 people. Gallium arsenide outper- -forms silicon in certain appli- cations in electronic circui- try. It ts also used for light, -emitting diodes — such as the digital read-out in clocks and indicator lights. Dr. H.E. Hirsch, Cominco’s manager of” technical re- search, who is in charge of electronic materials develop- ment and production, said demand for the product is in- creasing rapidly. “We are already consid- ering ‘expansion in this, as well'as other areas of elec- tronic’ materials manufac- ture. We have developed a high reputation for our tech- nology inthis industry and we expect our business will continue to increase,” he said. ‘The'invention of the tran- + sistor in 1948 broughtabout a demand for the rare metal, indium,: This element is a minute: component of cre fromthe Sullivan Mine at Kimberley. Cominco devel- oped a précess for indium recovery at its Trail research centre and began producing the metal in 1949, From this early supply of indium for transistors, the company's electronic mater- ials capability has expanded and diversified, It iss managed and’ operated by Cominco's techi research group, which has expertise in mat- erials science and processing, advanced analytical methods such as. X-ray topography, seanning electron microscope and other fields. ‘The range of more than 200 products-now includes 17 metals of sophisticated pur- ity, some ocntaining less than PROTECTIVE CLOTHING is being worn pe ag, rn E. The products are of various grades and forms to meet rigid customer spec- ifications, Dr. Hirsch said the Trail- produced materials are used in integrated circuits, solid state rectifiers, transistors, diodes, infrared detectors, light emitting diodes and other basic electronic com- ponents. “We are proud of the fact that electronic materials made in Trail have been to the moon and back,” he said. he than 200 pri le. loys 90 people making a range of more than foducts.
