Jerry Van Dyke comes
into his own on ‘Coach’

FF a long time, it looked

like Jerry Van Dyke’s
epitaph would read: “Here lies
Dick’s little brother, a banjo-
playing comedian who starred
in the worst show in the histo-
ry of television.’

Thanks to the hit comedy
“Coach,” that inscription will
have to be rewritten. In the
ABC Wednesday-night series
(also running on Canadian in-

dependent stations), Van Dyke
portrays befuddled assistant
football coach Luther Van
Dam at fictional Minnesota
State University. The role
earned him Emmy nomina-
tions and erased a no-win TV
track record that saw him star
in “Accidental Family” (1967)
and “Headmaster” (1970),
which both lasted four months,
and “13 Queens Blvd.” (1979),
which lasted a mere seven

“It feels every bit as good as
I knew it would,” laughs Van
Dyke. “Success is not hard to

handle.”

For most of his life, Van
Dyke’s career as a nightclub
performer was eclipsed by the
high-profile success of his old-
er brother Dick, the talented
physical comedian who
tripped over an ottoman each
week to open his eponymously
titled series. Although the
younger Van Dyke had his own
successful stand-up act, Dick
was the better-known sibling,
thanks to the power of
television.

When Jerry followed his big
brother into TV, a string of di-
sasters ensued, including the
much-maligned “My Mother
the Car.” It is often cited, per-
haps unfairly, as the worst TV
show ever. In the 1965 series,
Van Dyke played Dave Crab-
tree, whose nagging mother
was reincarnated as a 1928
Porter automobile.

At the beginning of Jerry
Van Dyke's television caréer,
an appearance on his brother’s
TV show led to a meeting with
Sherwood Schwartz, a produc-
er who wanted the younger
Van Dyke to play a character
named Gilligan in a new come-
dy series about a group of cast-
aways on a deserted island.
Van Dyke turned him down
flat.

“It was absolutely the worst

goes to show you what I know.
If I had taken ‘Gilligan’s Is-
land,’ I'd have been laughing
all the way to the bank a long
time ago.”
