Coach Daryl Weir was happy to get the win, but is concerned about the Rebels’ style of play. “I wasn't pleased with some of the aspects, we were a little bit cocky at the beginning of the game,” he told the Castlegar News. “But then the players realized good things come from hard work and they picked it up. The Rebels went, down by two goals early in the game when Rich Haldane scored with 23 seconds gone in the first period. Jamie Feltham and Todd DeBoeck assisted. But his work is a constant shuffle, as he is always adjusting to new lines. After playing a few games on a line with Nelson's Greg Adams, Bozek found himself on a line with Tony Tanti and Brian Bradley Friday night in the Canucks’ 5-2 win over the Chicago Black Hawks. While Bozek is jumping from line to line, he is always aware of his main role while on the ice for the Canucks. “As far as what they're expecting from me, it's a defensive role,” he says over the phone from Vancouver. “Every line I play on I'll be playing more of a defensive role.” Bozek says “every line” with good reason. He's been shuffled around enough to make your head spin. But he’s not bothered by moving around, particularly when he gets to play. “Actually the lines don’t stick together,” he says. “We're still trying to figure out what will work best.” You might think that getting moved from line to line would get a player to change his game plan or style of play but Bozek says the best thing to do is stick with what works best. For him, it's just going out and playing like he always does “T hi . "I just keep working hard at contributing to the team.” ‘The hard work is paying off as the Canucks have started the season with the club’s best defensive goals against average ever. Bozek said it is the determination of the players. “Things are really positive right ‘new. We've suffered a couple of losses that we shouldn't have, there have been some really close games, the goals just haven't been coming,” he says, adding he's hopeful his time with Tanti and Bradley will pay dividends. “We should be able to click for a couple.” * 6 « Meanwhile, in the better late than never department, the KIJHL resoundingly quashed any attempt to re-card 21-year-old players in the league. Earlier this month the KIJHL held a re-vote on the average hockey player rule which was brought into effect at the KIJHL annual general meeting last spring. Castlegar, Grand Forks and Columbia Valley all voted to get the overagers back in the league but were stopped. The league and team officials supported the 19-5 motion passed last spring to keep 21-year-olds out of the league “I knew there was no hope,” says Rebel president Rod Zavaduk. “On our side we didn’t have enough people to overpower the other side.” It was basically the Rebels, the Border Bruins and the Columbia Valley Rockies against the rest of the league on this one — and the rest of the league buried them. “There was no chance,” he says. “You couldn't persuade them, it was sort of a dead issue.” He says the overage issue will come up again at next year's KIJHL annual general meeting but he feels the concensus will be to convince the B.C. Amateur Hockey Association to take 21-year-olds out of Junior B hockey across the province. The BCAHA still endorses the use of 21-year-olds in Junior B hockey and the B.C. Junior Hockey League still cards 21-year-olds “They're going to make gure it's out of Junior B hockey altogether.” The meeting also supported league president Ian Currie’s initiative to crack down on players who fight late in the third period and verbally abuse officials. Players will face a one-game suspension for those violajjons instead of a game misconduct It appears the league is getting serious about abusive players. The $64,000-question is’ will the KIJHL be able to convince the BCAHA to take 21-year-old hockey players out of Junior B hockey programs province wide?
