Canadians, never known for celebrating history or heroes, saw an array of colorful char- acters, such as a drunken Sir John A. Macdonald (William Hutt) teetering in the House of Commons as he debated the railway project while drinking straight gin from his nearby “water” glass. With “The Na- tional Dream,” Canadians learned that their history wasn’t so boring after all. The “Great Lone Land” and “Pacific Scandal” episodes air on Sunday, followed on Thurs- day by “That Horrid B.C. Business.” e “The National Dream” is CBC’s counterprogramming ploy to baseball playoffs on CTV, but whether viewers find it as sexy an alternative as Jackie Collins’ “Lady Boss” is another matter. “Lady Boss” is a sequel to 1990’s “Lucky/Chances,” with tinues on succeeding Thurs- days. The eight-hour miniser- ies chronicles the national debates and political scandals that preceded the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway, an engineering feat that de- fined Canada and shaped the of Canadian history. “The National Dream,” which first aired in 1974, Berton’s account of Kim Delaney taking over from Nicollette Sheridan in the title role of Lucky Santangelo. It airs Sunday and Monday nights, Oct. 11 and 12, on a and Canadian e The baseball Tire con- tinue with Game 4 of the American League Champion- ship Series Sunday night, Oct. 11, on CTV. Game 5 of the AL series, if necessary, is sched- uled for Monday, with possible Games 6 and 7 on Wednesday afternoon and night. Games 6 and 7 of the National League contest, if needed, air Tuesday and Wednesday. Vikes look for revenge; Hockey goes to Florida BY CHRISTOPHER HULL eek 6 of the NFL season gets under way on Sun- day, Oct. 11, with all five NFC Central teams and the AFC West’s San Diego Chargers taking a break. NBC has the doubleheader, and CBS has the single game. Week 7 gets an early start on Thursday, Oct. 15, when the Detroit Lions visit the Minne- sota Vikings on TNT. This Rich Gannon should be one of the best mat- chups of the week. The NFC Central figures to be one of the most closely contested divi- sions in football, with both the Lions and Vikings prime con- tenders. In Week 2, the visiting Vikings outgained the Lions by more than 100 yards but still managed to lose the game 31- 17. Quarterback Rich Gannon was the culprit; his 20-for-36, 175-yard passing day included three interceptions that did in the Vikes. e Hockey fans can get a look at the NHL’s latest bid for southern exposure Friday, Oct. 16, on ESPN, when the Tampa Bay Lightning visit the Buffalo Sabres. The Lightning join the Ottawa Senators as one of the league’s two newest teams this season. And while expanding into Ottawa, a city with a long and successful his- tory in the game, makes good sense, we’ve got to wonder about going to Florida. Fans may remember the NHL’s last attempt at taking seed south of the Mason-Dixon line. The Atlanta Flames.be- gan play at the start of the 1972-73 season, and they added Tom Lysiak, a bona fide super- star, to their roster the follow- ing year. Between the time that Lysiak joined the team and 1980, when the franchise pulled up stakes and moved to Calgary, the Flames failed to make the playoffs just once and played sub-.500 hockey just once, but they still never gained a following. It’s 20 years since, but we have our doubts. The Tampa Bay backers, who include for- mer Boston Bruins and New York Rangers star Phil Espo- sito, are counting on the sup- port of transplanted North- erners to keep the Lightning afloat. But the fact that Espo- sito was quoted as saying he’d be happy to trot a horse out onto the ice to play goal for his team if that would sell tickets doesn’t bode well. e Baseball’s league champi- onship series continue this week (Games 5-7 if necessary): Sunday, NLCS Game 5 and ALCS Game 4; Monday, ALCS ALCS Game 7. Both league championship series and the World Series (which begins Saturday, Oct. 17) air on CBS. oe CLASSIFIED AD! The Neu 365-7266 SPORTS NC. (A) in Stereo) MORNING ars WINNERS Schrader.
