But for Gerry Biccum, it's part of a system he calls “handology” and he has spent 14 years gathering evidence to prove there's something to it. Biccum is a production control analyst with a com. puter services company in Mississauga, just west of Toronto, and he has used his computer skills to store and organize all he can discover about handology. He now claims an 80-per-cent accu racy rate in analysing per. sonality and life events from birth to present. Biccum's so-called science is derived from chirognomy, a concept pioneered in the United States by William Benham, a professor of physiology. Chirognomy re lates physical attributes of the hand to character traits. Biceum says it's a complex science involving thousands of pieces of information and combinations. “It's based on the fact that it takes almost 60 per cent of the power of the brain to use the thumb as a tool,” says Biccum. “The ‘palm has more nerve endings than any other part of the body, and because the hands are lised without con scious thought, they reflect the makeup of the brain.” PROF DISAGREES But Ian Taylor, an an atomy professor at the Uni. versity of Toronto, calls Bic: cum's interpretation of the facts “gross over-represent ation. “It takes much less than 10 per cent of the brain to use the thumb, and the ends of the fingers on the palm side Slap for insult have many more ‘nerve end- ings.” The hands are rarely used without conscious thought, Taylor adds. Just the same, Biccum in- sists his system works. He studies the whole hand — not just the lines of the palm — including skin tone and tex- ture, finger length, nails and hair. These features have been matched to countless personality traits over the years. Biccum calls traditional palm-reading a farce. The difference between it and chirognomy, he says, is that the latter was not + te senior citizens * ICBC Cloims WANTED PEOPLE ORIENTED SALES PERSON With high maturity level for import Car Dealership. Excellent opportunity tor career minded person. On the compony cor, medical and the best commission to predict the future. He believes the combina- tion of computer science and handology can pave the way to better human understand- ing. Apparently others do, too. There is a stack of reports on his table about people that have come to him for help. He has analysed 300 people and found violent tendencies, health problems, even extra marital affairs. He says his system has also helped the confused find direction by showing them where their potential lies. “Since your hand uses up so much of your brain, it is actually recording the emo- tion that you're feeling.” Taylor, meanwhile, calls handology “harmless fun.” Although he has never seen any evidence, the anatomist says it's entirely possible there are some aspects of the hand that reflect personality. Biccum has organized his findings into a 277-page man ual — a guide to handology with diagrams and simple in structions for self-analysis. y. but age and ore unimpor- Send your applications to: Box 3007-K, News Castleger, B.C.
