A team from Victoria proved to be Castlegar’s nemesis throughout the tourney beating the locals in the preliminary round and-then-again_in the final game. Castlegar started things off on the right foot with an opening game 5. 0 walk over Dawson Creek. A Piegé of the Actign! ant Some? from $296.00/mo. That loss set up a rematch with Vancouver in the semi-finals where Walter Ambrosio and Sandy Booth seored one each as Castlegar edged Vancouver 2-1 for the second time in the tourney. The final was a tight affair and Zeznik was brilliant in goal but Castlegar couldn’t pull it off in losing 3-2 to Victoria. Still, the loss gave the Warlocks the title of Provincial B Champions and the right to represent the province in the Western Canadian Champion- ships in Manitoba a year from now. Zeznik earned the individual honor as the tournament's best goaltender while Booth and Terry Ward were all- star team selections for Castlegar. Celebrities coming back The local branch of the Canadian Red Cross Society has confirmed that the Jim Young Celebrity Golf Tour- nament will once again take place in Castlegar. It will be played on July 5 at the Castlegar and District Golf Club. “This tournament has raised $20,000 in two years for needed Red Cross Services such as Blood Donor Recruitment and Emergency programs,” said Gary Ockenden, regional director of the Red Cross. “We're delighted that Jim Young will be pulling for us again.” Last year, 25 sport and media celebrities including Felix” Beiczyk Greg Adams, Pat Price, Andy Moog, Norm Grohmann and master of ceremonies John McKeachie joined about 100 area golfers for a fun-filled day of golf and an evening banquet at the Sandman Inn. Fastball gearing up Men interested in playing fastball this season in Castlegar are urged to attend the next meeting of the Castlegar Men’s Fastball League Wed- nesday at 7 p.m. at the Hi Arrow Hotel. League treasurer Bill Savinkoff says there will be no formal registration for the league, which had four teams last year, so players who want to join have to make their intentions known at the meeting. Players must be 16 years old and over. A tentative starting date for the league has been set for April 30._ Martini, Hurd update Though it wasn’t a successful season for the team, Castlegar’s Dar- cy Martini and Kelly Hurd posted positive individual numbers for the Michigan Technological University Huskies hockey team. Hurd, a third-year forward for the Huskies, finished sixth on the team in scoring with 12 goals and 25 points in 40 games. His five power play goals was second on the team. Martini, a rugged defenceman in his second year at the university, scored three goals and added 16 assists for 19 points, which is 16 more points than he compiled in his rookie season. The six-foot-four, 220-pound blueliner set a team single-season record for penalties with 59 for 150 minutes in 36 games: SPORTS Jays look good if their 24-man puzzle. The Blue Jays approach the uncertain 1990 season in far better shape than many American League clubs. In the field, the team is loaded with experience and many players have complained in the past that the four- week exhibition season is two weeks longer than it needs to be. And on the mound, Toronto has a solid five-man rotation returning, as well as three more proven starters and a deep bullpen: Starters use exhibition games to strengthen their ar- ms, beginning with three-inning stints and working up to seven or more. As the lockout progresses, it increases the likelihood that the teams will need to carry more than the standard 10 pitchers to help them through April and May, because many starters will have reached only four- or five- inning strength when the regular season starts. Manager Cito Gaston who arrived Wednesday in Dunedin, Fla., to observe Toronto’s minor-league camp, faces an opening-day deadline of April 3, when the Blue the Texas Rangers in Arlington, Tex. Gaston doesn’t like the idea of Wilson in the leadoff spot because his on-base percentage is perilously close to his batting average. If Sojo could prove himself ready as a utility in- fielder, vice-president Pat Gillick would be free to trade Manny Lee, who shared time with Liriano at second last season, as well as backing up Fernandez at short. The shortening of spring training is pertiaps hardest on players such as Sojo, who is being deprived of playing time in which to impress Gaston and Gillick. John Olerud, a first baseman signed out of college late last season, and Glenallen Hill, who’s fighting for an outfield spot, are two more rookies hurt by the lockout. Although there-was-no-money_in- volved, it was the classic story of the underdogs rising to the occasion and the favorites falling in the playoffs of the Banjo’s Ball Busters eight-ball pool league at Banjo’s Pub Sunday afternoon. One of the first_giants killed was top point-getter during the regular ceremoniously dumped by Ray Bann, in the B final and then was eliminated from the playoffs in his next game. Ken Leitner won all the marbles by taking the A Division final over regular season sharp-shooter Gary Hyson In the C event, all the top five players in the league were quickly eliminated as Tom Flynn and Peter Ozeroff took centre stage and battled for four games before Ozeroff emerged the winner. With this tourney, the Ball Busters’ season comes to an end but there is talk of a spring tourney for seniors. season, Sean Coulson, who was uN Masters, U.S. and British Opens and the PGA. All those tournaments are preented by organizations other than the PGA Tour. But the Europeans are raining on Beman’s parade. They all plan to play next wéek at Bay Hill in Orlando, Fla. WEAKENS FIELD “In other years, this tournament had the strongest field in golf,’’ said two-time U.S. Open champion Curtis Strange. ‘‘But with the Europeans missing, you can’t say the same this year.” It’s all part of a continuing rift between the American tour ad- ministration and Europe's leading players. Faldo and Langer resigned their American tour ips late last restricted in the number of American events in which they compete. All have decided to play in the Masters in April, and will start their preparation for the season’s first major next week. in addition to his Masters title, Faldo is a former British Open win- ner.
