Since 1908 604 Baker Street * Nelson, B.C Aimhigher” ROR AROAGE thomae Wednesday, April 5, 1995 WATER HEATING + Downsize to instantaneous water heaters. These space saving small units can be wall mounted and heat water for one use at a time as required (without a tank), to give a con- tinuous never-ending stream of hot water at considerable ings. These i heaters are not appropriate for simultaneous multiple use. + If you have an electric water heater, wrap it in an insulating jacket designed for this pur- pose. Insulation kits are avail- able at hardware stores, and are quickly and easily strapped around the outside with tape. CAUTION: Insulating jack- ets must not be used on nat- ural gas, oil or propane water heaters. + Insulate long stretches of hot water pipes passing through unheated areas. (Any pipe within one metre of the tank should be wrapped.) Special wrap is available at hardware and building supplies stores. Be sure to use heat-resistant wrap, especially if you have a natural gas water heater. + Add hot to cold rather than cold to hot when you need warm water. + Fix leaky taps immediately! A hot water tap, dripping once every second, wastes a tankful of water each week. The prob- lem is usually an inexpensive, worn-out washer. Use cold water to rinse ands and dishes. How many times have you turned on the hot water tap, but finished washing your hands before the water got hot. All you've done is fill the pipe with hot water. ¢ Put dishes in the drainer and pour a bowl of water over them instead of rinsing them separately under a tap (this can use up to 30 gallons of water per meal). « Keep a small plastic basin in the sink for washing vegeta- bles or, at the least, put a plug in the sink rather than running the water, * Install low-flow: sk ower- heads and flow reducer devices on taps. * Shampoo your hair in a sink instead of the shower and you'll save three times as much hot water. + Switch to an electric razor. Believe it or not, shaving with an electric razor uses less energy than it takes to heat the hot water you would use for a traditional shave. At the very least, don't let the hot water tun. Up to 20 gallons of water can run down the drain with those whiskers. Instead, half- fill the basin. ‘The home is the third biggest energy hog in the country, - after industry and transportation’ — GREATER VANCOUVER REGIONAL DISTRICT LIGHTING + Turn off traditional incandes- cent lights when they're not in use, no matter how soon you'll need them again. Incandescent lights don't suffer loss of life when switched off; but fre- quent turning off and on of a flourescent light may shorten its life a bit. Still, if any area is going to be unoccupied for moré than 15 to 20 minutes, you'll save ‘niofe energy by turning the lights off. Install three-way switches, which allow you to switch lights on and off from more than one location and make it more convenient to turn lights off when they are not in use. + Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs, which simulate the cosy light of an incandescent but use up to 75% less energy and can last up to 10 times longer, according to the manufactur- ers. They're pricey, so start with the most-used bulbs in The Castlegar Sun your home (replace the remaining bulbs with tung- sten-halogen). Most will fit into your existirig light fix- tures, Dimmers are possible now too, but you'll need newer bulbs with electronic ballasts. ¢ Halogen bulbs are also energy savers, using half the energy and lasting two and a half times longer than incandescent, + Rearrange furniture to take advantage of natural light for reading. * Avoid having too many lights on one switch. + Use fluorescent tubes in laundry rooms, garages, base- ments, workshops and other areas where lights may be left on for a long time. + Install solid-state dimmer switches to vary light level, sae energy and extend bulb life. + Use timers and pro- grammable controls. + Install occupancy sensors or motion detectors. These will automatically turn off your lights when you leave a room. + Buy lights for closets and Teo Mest Famous Giishet m the World Weta Wagon SINCE 1930 It’s time to call your Welcome Wagon hostess. Don't be fooled by long-life bulbs; they're actually less efficient than a standard incandescent. + In fixtures with two or three bulbs, try removing one. You probably won't notice the dif- ference. (Screw in a burned- out bulb for safety's sake). + Keep lamps, fixtures and bulbs clean. Dirt cuts down on light levels.
