In Brilliant, Helen and Mike Cheveldave Say it takes three men just to move one of their pumpkins. And in Castlegar, the squash is so large at Rose Rohn’s house it threatens to fall through the small utility shed in her backyard. Rohn’s son Bruce figures the squash is so big this year because the vegetables are growing out of a compost heap. But why are we getting all these different mutant vegetables? Grower Bill Garnett of Columbia Valley Greenhouses in Trail figures it was the long growing season. “The length of the season has an effect,” Garnett said. “That, and what kind of organic matter it was fowins in. The healthier the plant the larger the plant.” But was the tendril-bearing Curcurbita maxima really a fluke? : Were sinister forces at work upon the decumbent vine of the Cucurbita Pepo? Should ‘Doukhobor Marijuana’ be legalized? Garnett says for competition growing, some people will slit open the vine of the plant and feed it milk through a wick. Also, taking all other plants off the vine and leaving one to receive all the nourishment helps too. Nevertheless, come Thanksgiving some local folks will need a sizeable horn-of-plenty. | Rachynski Five-year-old Alycia Matthews (left) and three-year-old Taya Voykin climb on the massive pumpkins of their great grandparents Helen and Mike Cheveldave.
