The president of the Castlegar and District Heritage Society said he is pleased an old Castlegar jail was spared the wrecking ball. The building was scheduled to be torn down as part of the Castlegar-Robson bridge project. “The demolition crew was on our side, so we had a stay of execution,” Coyle said. On Oct. 29, on a rainy, overcast Thursday, all the elements of community spirit came together in an effort to move the old jail. Numerous volunteers, contractors and corporations chipped in to get the building from Columbia Avenue to the Heritage Society’s CP Rail Museum on 13th Avenue. Coyle says the idea has been in the works since April. eae Rock “I heard about it through (Mayor) Audrey Moore,” Coyle said. “And I heard through her the old jail was sitting up their. ” part was an office. “(The jail) was being used as a garage. The back part was a jail, and the front “As (the project) went along it gathered people,” Coyle said. “And I’ve got to say, this was at absolutely no cost to the taxpayers of Castlegar and area.” Coyle said he figures the jail is about 60 years old. “T only know of one fellow who spent the night in there,” Coyle said. “{ asked him ‘would you give us a hand with the old jail’ and he said ‘oh yeah, I spent the night there once, lovely.” For now, the jail will probably spend the winter in a tarp cocoon. “At the present time all we plan to do is board it up, put some tarps over the roof and leave it for the winter,” Coyle said. “By the time we're through with that corner down there it’s going to look News photo by Corinne Jackson damn nice.” s very wet Thursday that saw the old jail relocated next to the CP Rail Museum.
