Terry Huberts told reporters he
won't seek the nomination in
the Saanich North and the Islands
constituency outside Victoria.

“The party has not offered me
anything nor have we discussed with
anybody about future possibilities,’
Huberts said of his sudden announ-
cement.

He said he wants to spend more
time with his family and doesn’t want
to be part of a political struggle that
could hurt the party.

Last month, Huberts upstaged
Couvelier in a battle to get supporters
elected to the executive of the new
riding, a move widely interpreted as a
victory on the road to the
nomination.

The nomination meeting has not
been scheduled. Premier Bill Vander
Zalm has until October 1991 to call an
election.

Couvelier and Huberts currently
represent the dual-member riding of
Saanich and the Islands.
Redistribution has split the riding into
Saanich South and Saanich North and
the Islands.

Saanich North is considered to be a
stronger Social Credit area. Neither
Huberts nor Couvelier had given any
previous indication he would bow out
of the race for that riding’s
nomination.

“I know it’s a sulbrise, it’s fairly
new to me, but the last three weeks
I’ve been really struggling inside what
my priorities are for the next six or
seven years as my kids are growing
up,”’ Huberts said.

Huberts, who was bumped from
cabinet last year after only 16 months,
said he spoke to friends and family
but not to Vander Zalm or Couvelier
before making his decision.

Although he plans to return at least
part time to his profession as a
veterinarian, Huberts said he will
work to elect Socred candidates in
both Saanich ridings.

Couvelier was unavailable for
comment.
