By CasNews Staff Canadian country singer Stompin’ Tom Connors, who hasn’t toured in 15 years, will be at the Cominco Arena in Trail May 23 as part of a coast-to-coast tour set for the spring, summer and fall of this year. Connors’ name is synonymous with Canadian history and folklore and his unique ability to immortalize people, places or happenings in song has allowed him to carve out a niche that is now his own private musical territory, a news release says. “*I guess a lot of folks will be won- dering why I am hitting the road again,’’ Connors says in the release. “Well, it’s a lot of things really. The requests for Stompin’ Tom to appear at various functions have increased €ach passing year. “Why, the past couple of years I must have had over 100 inquiries for Prince Eward. Island alone,” he says, “And they came from everybody, from people having backyard do’s to big and small promoters all over Canada. If there are that many wan- ting Stompin’ Tom in PEI, it stands to reason that there must bé a heck of a lot in the rest of the country."” His most recent recording is Fiddle and Song which includes his tribute to k.d. lang, titled Lady k.d. lang. Mellencamp first displayed is work last year at an exhibit with jazz artist Miles Davis in Los Angeles. The 29 portraits depict the singer- songwriter’s family and friends. The facial expressions created by his muted brush strokes are always sad and convey the same disillusionment found in his musical anthems about the nation’s heartland and its farm crisis. “I think you can say much more in studio and he could afford to spend much of the last year in an art studio he had built next to his home near Bloomington. He-and his wife, Vicky, are in the middie of a divorce. The’yre the parents of Teddi Joe, 8, and Justice, 4, who are living with their mother. Farm Aid IV concert in Indianapolis on_-March-7.. The-rousing- ovation -he received and his energetic three-song performance were far removed from the solitude of a blank canvas. Mellencamp organized the first Farm Aid back in 1984 with Willie Nelson as a benefit for struggling farmers. “TI think people my age need to start taking their position in the seriously, and start dealing with local problems within the system,”™-he said-in-an interview. “I don’t mean standing in the back rows and throwing stuff, any coward cag id. do that. ‘@ painting than you can in a stupid ** song,’ he said in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine last year. “Some days I start at seven o’clock in the morning, and I paint until five, eat dinner and come back and paint till midnight. I don’t have to see anybody. I don’t have to talk to anybody. It’s better than sex for me.”* However, Mellencamp’s wealth hardly fits the stereotype of a struggling artist. His albums have sold-millions, he records in his own music career is over, but it has taken an extended vacation. His growing discontent with pop stardom surfaced in his last all Big Daddy. “Never wantéd\o be no pop singer, never wanted to write no pop songs,” goes the bitter refrain of the hit single, Pop Singer; which offers Mellen- camp’s cynical view of today’s music scene. "We tried that in the "60s and it ~ didn’t work out too good. I mean to take affirmative action, and to make positive steps to change in a country that needs to go through that right now.” But those who have worked with Mellencamp say he’s serious about painting, and that it isn’t merely a hobby. Jan Royce travelled to Mellencamp’s studio several times last summer to help him learn oil techniques. Farewell planned for writer A farewell tribute is planned for West Kootenay writer Ernst Havemann and his artist wife, Isabel, May 19 at 8 p.m. at the SUB, 711- 10th St., in Nelson Havemann, who was born in South Africa, moved to BaJfowr in 1978. He“: is the author of Bloodsong and Other Stories of South Africa and a four- time winner of the CBC literary.com- petition. The Havemann’s have decided to relocate to Australia to be closer to their family, a news release said. A retirement hobby became a second career after Havemann took courses at the former David Thom- pson University Centre in Nelson, under such writers as Audrey Thomas and Clark Blaise. His stories have ap- peared—in—the Atlantic, — Saturday Night and several other magazines. His work has been called chilling, Spare and ironic, as well as possessing great depth of feeling. “I think of my stories as yarns that somebody could relate over a cam- pfire,’” Havemann says. Admission to Saturday’s event, which will feature _ homemade refreshments and short literary readings, is by donation.
