By perhaps stretching the point a bit, thoughts also begin to center around the idea of shop- ping for gifts here at home in the stores of Castlegar and Kinnaird. At the one extreme, all-.shopping should be done in this area where local merchants pay taxes, contribute to local charities and appeals, and generally con- History Repeats In an I “weekly published in Winnipeg,’ Nov. 6, 1902 ‘ap- peared the following item: . “Sixteen hundred Doughobors, all hungry, lean, barefooted and_ sparsely clothed, have this week left their land and cattle and walked into Yorkton, Sask- atchewan. Their cattle have been left to run loose. They. have left all their worldly belongings. “Carrying invalids, they came into town exclaiming that they were looking for Jesus. Later they left the town again stating that the Lord had told them to do so. © “From the townspeople they refused all assistance of clothing and food. His roots go back a century in this province. Most of his male forebeard HAVE: been legislators in thi two, hi who practice in the hospital have been cooperating with the board in a manner which could well be emulated in other parts of the province. They have not al- ways agreed with the board, but at least they have been willing to meet with the board and discuss any differences. The hospital society’s annual. meeting next March should be well attended by Persons who have the right to vote. But to have that right means joining the soc- iety by the end of this year. You can do so. by contacting Mrs. Clara S: in » his Davie and his’ great-uncle Davie uphill fight for him, but if any man | pre, Fulion Brings Excitement this, beitig the capital, is the seat of Government and the very heart ‘and home of B.C, politics. He could not possibly be called Q carpet-bagger in Victoria, though 7 Kamloops, Sectal Credit will say he was afraid to face up to Mr. Gag- Jardi, He could not be called a earpet-bagger here, for while he was born in Kamloops he want to school here, His mother was born here, His family has ilved in Vic- toria from colonial times. The fight Fulton is ‘about to embark upon is bigger than person- alities; he’s too astute to get into a wild personal Wattle with Gaglardi. There's much more at stake than that. He wants to be the Premier, not merely MLA for Kamloops. He doesn’t want to sit in opposition to mier Bennett's : Social Credit. Even being Leader of the Opposi- tion wouldn't satisfy him, though if he could attain that, he'd be on: his way to the Premiership, The: next provincial ‘general election's going to be plenty excit- were Premiers. |. The only mistake made so far hurried so that Fulton could run in the Dec, 17 byelection in Point Grey and so, perhaps, gain a seat in the Legislature. A party leader should be in the House. =. The big, intriguing question at the moment is this: where will Ful- ton seek a seat. Everybody is sure it will be in Kamloops; a battle of the titans in Kamloops—between fulton and Highways Minister Gag- lardi. Castlegar at 283 - 3rd Avenue. A Two-Way S treet tribute to the well-being of the commun- ity. At the. other extreme, these same merchants buy from wholesalers offering the lowest prices and the widest variety of merchandise and they can hardly ex- pect’ the would-be purchaser to do other than to buy. locally only if the goods being offered here are of sufficient var- iety to please’ the greater percentage of the p are of ive qaul- ity, and — most importantly — are priced competatively with the same goods being offered at Trail and Nelson. An exhortation to. “Shop, at Home” is ‘good for the idea behind it is that dol- lars’ spent locally .continue to circulate locally and thus help boost the local economy. But in this time of fast cars, greater mobility and good highways, the gas for a drive of 20 or 30 miles can be written off to entertainment and once a potential shopper has to leave this area for just one: item, he or she is going to purchase a number of other gifts while away. But just as the local merchant has a responsibility to ensure that the lines he carries are as complete as is possible, the residents of this area also have a re- sponsibility to look over local stocks and purchase everything they can here. In this. way, those on both sides of ‘the counter are doing the proper thing by their communities. After all, trade is a two-way street. Why should Fulton seek personal defeat there by opposing Gaglardi? If all Davie Fulton has in mind is personally beating Mr. G. he'd best stay in Ottawa, Fulton, therefore, might run in adjoining Salmon Arm riding, which is part of his Federal riding of Kamloops. That wouldn't be run- ning scared; it would only be good sound common horse sense. Fulton has never represented Kamloops in the B.C. House.
