. w.il ,._ li.ry I Starting off this week we have announcements with regard to ladies' curling. The first one I got was from Viv Thompson, who writes the ladies' afternoon club held a meeting on Oct. 12 and it was decided an open house will be held Oct. 25 and 'n. Viv, who is the club's president, tells me Dorothy Fines will be on hand to give lessons. You could be pleasantly surprised by how quickly you can adjust to the sport· and next thing you know, you get so you hate to miss a game. Luncheon will be served at the newly-renovated club room and then it's on to the ice to enjoy the sport which has an attraction for a lot of men and women the world over. Beryl Davis will be this year's publicity agent for the afternoon ladies and we can look for some regular reports on the club's operation. The other report came from Florence Valentine, who is president of the Rossland Business Girls Club. This club is composed of women who work days and get in their curling in the evenings. Regular curling begins Nov. 7. So, there it is, ladies! You are all set to get off to a good start and may you all have a good season and lots of fun. The men's clubs and the retirees have yet to make an announcement regarding their starting dates, but we should have these by next week. H the season matches the just completed golf season, it'll be swell. Well, you'll probably be hearing enough aboqt the curling season as it progresses so we'll switch to something else now. ceased to collect green fees· at the golf course. The leaves were getting to be quite a problem and with the coming of the colder days and attendant dampness, it was thought that it was no longer worthwile, so, Richie is down there today cleaning up and with this the 1983 golf season at the upper course is over. Well, the baseball season is over and it turned out to be a pitcher's series and the team with the best pitching waJked away with all the marbles. After their initial loss at home in a game which actually could have gone either way, the Orioles didn't make too many miscues. Eddie Murray's boo-boo at first base in the highest scoring game was easily forgotten with his two homers in the finale. The retirees have now I have heard a lot of talk around about the Canadian teams showing on the past season and I guess most of us say, "Well! Maybe next year will be the one," but I feel pretty sure it will be a fong time before we see an allCanadian World Series. Both the teams played well for part of the year before phenomenal · crowds but when it got down to the Dittygritty, they just seemed to come up short. Now, to satisfy my old friend Doug Johnson, I have it on the best of authority, ( well, "pretty dam good," anyway) that it was indeed Yogi Berra who made the quote, referring to a past World Series in which he was engaged. Playing in what turned out to be the final game he said, "It's never over until it's over." So, Doug, you come up the winner in that bet you were telling us of.
