A8 CASTLEGAR NEWS, July 15, 1981 Local youth to appear with group mall business in duo threat VANCOUVER (CP — Bankers here are confident small businesses can survive current record interest rates, but warn that managers’ business skills will be sev- erely tested in the process. Some, like Bob Dohan, as- sistant manager of the Fed- eral Business Development Bank, say a greater threat to business is the national pos- fal strike. Dohan says businesses re- lying on the mail for cash flow will find things tough, especially if the strike con- tinues for any length of time. “However, if a manager can get through this period of restricted income and record interest rates, he or she should be able to cope with anything.” Local financial institutions report small businesses are unFest ‘81 MEMBER MLS July 18 - 26 CASTLEGAR, looking for fixed-rate loans instead of loans based on the prime-rate plus one or two percentage points. The fixed- rate loans enable them to de- termine exactly how much money they will need to meet monthly repayments. This time last year a small business could borrow funds at around 15 per cent on a prime-plus basis. The same variety of loan now carries an interest charge of as much as 22 per cent. The difference can be criti- cal to a small business. Monthly interest payments on a $200,000 loan are $2,500 at 15 per cent, but $3,666 at 22 per cent. That extra $1,166 can represent the sal- ary of a part-time worker. Mark Kowalko, who re- ceived his elementary and high school education in this city, will be returning to his hometown of Castlegar as bass singer in the group Ordinary People, currently on tour for Warner Pacific College of Portland, Ore. They will be giving a full concert at Kinnaird Church of God, on Monday at 7:30 p.m. Kowalko (second from left in photo) has completed his second year of studies at Warner Pacific College with emphasis on physical edu- cation, health and music. “Ordinary People” have been touring California, the north- western states and western Canada, ‘and will also be appearing in several concerts in Alaska. There will be one concert only in this area — the Monday evening perfor- mance at’ the Kinnaird Church of God. Everyone is welcome.
