Timber

licence

up for grabs

Westar Timber has sur-
rendered its forest licence in
the Kootenay Lake Timber
Supply Area, Forests Min-
ister Tom Waterland an-
nounced.

Applications are invited
for new 20-year forest li-
cences for all or part of the
310,000-cubic-metre annual
timber harvest now available
in the area.

Applications must include
Proposals to continue, ex-
pand or construct a timber
processing facility within 30
kilometres of Nelson.

“Such a development
should result in an improve-
ment in the employment
situation in the Nelson area,”
Waterland said.

Deadline for submissions is
May 16.

1985 marks the 90th An-
aiversary of Sons of Norway
International, a fraternal be-
nefit society. Sons of Norway
is the largest Norwegian
heritage organization in the
world.

In Castlegar, Nordic No.
76 Lodge is the local chapter
of Sons of Norway and shares
in this jon and is

110,000 members; 375 local
units throughout the United
States, Canada, and Norway.
Today, Sons of Norway has
three business lines; insur-
ance, Nordic America Travel
and Nordic Living, Inc. real
estate company to support its
growing fraternal program.

The local lodge sponsors
and provides guides for “Ski
for Light", a program for
blind skiers. It also supports
the Nordic Ski Touring Club,
a cross-country ski club, and
the Nordic Soccer Team. The
lodge recently donated to the
Stordah! Health Centre in
northern B.C.

Recent raffles put on by
the lodge included the one at
its November tea when Coral
McDougall was the winner of
the grocery hamper. Winners

The next big event to be
sponsored by the lodge is a
cultural workshop which will

cing and Scandinavian cook
ing classes.

design and fly a kit repres-
enting a famous Canadian
book. The kite can be of any
shape, size or material (mat-
erials not provided by the
library).

Book prizes will be awar-
ded to the best representa-
tions of famous Canadian
titles.

Ability to fly is not strictly
necessary though flying per-
formance will qualify entries
for small bonus prizes in The
Great Canadian Kite Flying
Event, planned for April 13
at 2 p.m. in Kinsmen Park,
weather permitting.

Special prizes for highest
flying kites in each category.
Individual, group or class
entries will be accepted.

Entry deadline is April 9.
Bring kites to either branch
for judging and display. Pick
up kites for flying event in
the Castlegar branch after 1
p.m. April 13.

Couple
speaks
at Aglow

The Castlegar Women's
Aglow Fellowship held its
annual evening meeting
March 7 with men and
women of different cultures
and backgrounds coming to-
gether.

Bertha Pepper led in a
time of praise and worship,
choosing choruses that em-
phasized unity in Jesus
Christ and expressed love to
God and to each other.

Pastor and Mrs. Johnson
performed a duet, as did
Pastor and Mrs. Stobbe.

The evening's guest speak-
ers were Michael and Laura
Hargreaves of Rossland.

The theme of Mrs. Har.
greaves’ message was the
tremendous love the Lord
has for His people.

She spoke of this love
being reflected throughout
the Bible and said that it is
necessary to experience and
understand this love not only
in the mind but in the very
center of one’s being.

Reading from Isaiah 43:1-7
and sharing experiences from
her own life, Mrs. Har.
greaves talked about God's
promise to always be with his
people and to sustain them.

She said, “God doesn't
promise us that we won't
ever have troubles and trials
in this life. He knows that
just living as a part of this
broken earth will probably
bring problems into our
lives.”

She stressed, however,
God’s promise to His people
to be with them in every
sorrow or heartache, to pro-
teet them from harm and to
meet their needs.

Focusing on the healing
power of Christ, Mr. Har-
greaves related an incident
when their son, Steven, had
fallen out of a tree. X-rays
showed that Steven had
broken his neck.

Upon transfer to a larger
hospital facility, subsequent
x-rays indicated that there
was no break or real injury.

Mr. Hargreaves said, “I
just know in my heart, and
Laura does and so does
Steven . that the Lord
healed him.”

He spoke of healing, not
necessarily being physically
A-1, but meaning to be made
whole and that often means a
need to be healed of bit-
terness, pain and anger.

“Jesus doesn't want us to
be crippled. He doesn’t want
us to be. burdened with
resentments, with hurts,
with anything that's going to
block His love channeling
through us,” he said.

Mrs. Betty Hill of North
Dakota will be the guest
speaker at the next luncheon
to be held on April 10 at the
banquet room of the Fireside
Place.
