The following is a very interesting piece of history, dating back to 1887, from the pen of Van B. PeLashmutt, of ‘Spokane: A party headed by Geo. B. Leyson, proceeded down Lake Christina, pros- pecting as they went, and along the Dewdney trail to the head of Sheep creek. It was while plodding along over the trail that one of the party chanced to see a piece of galena and carbonate ore on the side of the path- way, which assayed 275 ounces in sil- ver. Further investigation satisfied them that they had located the ledge. At last their summer's toils and hard- ships had been rewarded by the covet- ed discovery of a new Eldorado, but they must have a fresh supply of pro- visions and some tools and powder before they could test it thoroughly enough to satisfy themselves as well as to give it any standing in the min- tag world. Fort Colville, 80 miles diatant, was the nearest trading point, whither they repaired at once for the necessary powder, tools ‘and provi- sions to test it to their eutice satisfac- tion. They sunk a shaft 18 feet deep, which proved unsatisfactory. They then ran « tunnel 25 feet, tapping the véin, which was alsc unsatisfactory During the . progress of the above work they took out and left on the dump several tons of ore which assayed 29 ounces in silvor and $2 in gold —too low a grade to even build their usual castles in the air upon, since it would not stand the ordinary cost of transportation, Thia was the second find which proved cf im:uerse value to those who followed late—wherein they were too previous to be of any i jt ial benefit to h 1 5 However, they located a claim upon their workings aud called it the Alpha, and it was duly recorded at Rock Creek. ‘They also located and record- ed two other claims, called the Tom _ Payne and the Regina. Not keeping up their assessment work they lost title to them at the end of the year,! and the Alpha, or discovery claim, was “relucated by the name of the Lily May | ward. iby ‘a Freachman named Bordeau, who| Copper Giant Fraction, J J Bristoe sold i¢ to Bolle and Raymond of Ore- jens J H Murphy to Chas H Trego. gon, who in turn sold it to Senator CERTIFICATES OF WORK. ‘Turner, W.
