ona SRS CASTLEGAR NEWS, September 24,1980 ‘ : he dee ‘Ann Landers < you have ever received. | arn writing It to repay, In small Measure, my debt to soolety. | Hope you will print it. 1am an ex-con who has gone straight, but | want to | . Say you are right about gun control. For many years | supported myself in style by master-minding and engaging in armed robberies. My epecialty was private homes in affluent neighborhoods. | know a lot about . affluent neighborhoods because | was reared in one. Having spent a few years In San Quentin, | acquired all the tricks of the trade. There is no better place to learn the skills of an accomplished burglar than In prison. Please continue to tell your readers that firearms In the hands of private citizens are dangerous. Almost all handguns used by me and others In my tine of work were obtained by taking them away ‘from people who were scared stiff and didn't know how to use them. | never bought a gun In my Ilfe. Older people and women are a cinch. At feast half the citizens who buy weapons to “*protect’’ themselves have never used a gun. ‘Some- times they get panicky and shoot a hole In the wall — or their own foot. The Intruder Is then forced to flre a shot which ts far better aimed. { have to laugh when | hear the pro-gun people say, “Ifyou ban guns only the criminats will have them.’’ The truth Is, if guns were banned there would be fewer guns In the hands of ALL of us, and that would mean fewer * criminats and fewer gunshot wounds and fatalities. 1 never thought I'd be writing to Ann Landers, especially since I've given up my old career, but I'm glad you're around, Old Girl, You do‘a great Job. Stay ‘wall. — Very Anonymous ‘Dear VAL but a letter from someone who has been on the other end of the muzzle Is a lot more effective than anything | might say. Thanks for a splendid contribution toward helping to make this a safer and saner world. Dear Ann Landers: | identified with the woman who sald ‘ she deeply resented it when her doctor called her by her first name. (She was old enough to be his-mother.) My doctor would never think of calling me Ruth, all the young squirts who area part of my life — my hairdresser, the parking lot attendant, elevator ‘oper- ators, receptionists, even the librarians — they all call me Ruth. A survey | saw recently reported that most people prefer to be on a first-name basis, regardless of status. They clalm it makes them feel more comfortable. Well, | Don’t, but If | say so, ! fear I'll be considered a snob, stuffy, unfriendly, or downright un-American. Perhaps Ann Landers can change this? — Over-Ruth’d Dear Over: You give me more credit than | deserve, Madame, but perhaps | can help you by offering an alternative. If it annoys you to be called Ruth by certain ‘“‘young .’’ simply say, ‘I'd prefer that you called me Mrs. ” From that time on your relationship with that person will become quite formal —, perhaps even strained. So don’t be surprised when it happens. CONSUMER ACTION “Consumer Action,"’-a feature sponsored by this news- paper and the Bi Corporate Affairs, provides an opportunity Yor readers to solve marketplace Problems or obtain answers to consumer- related questions. Answer: Your attitude greatly con- tributes to the effectiveness of ‘your complaint. Remember that you have paid for the mer- chandise or service, and you have the right to expect satis- faction. Don’t suffer-silently, or be embarrassed to com- plain. A reputable business- person wants your patronage, and deserves to know if some- thing is wrong. If you com- plain, be honest, fair, polite and firm. Consider the fol- lowing: 1) Is your complaint legiti- mate, or is the fault really * yours? 2) If you have a legitimate complaint, speak up. You have a right to expect the product or service to per- form adequately. 3) Anticipate problems and collect evidence. Always keep your receipts, esti- mates and warranties. 4) Give the merchant the first‘ chance to resolve your problem before going to the Better Business Bureau or a consumer centre. 5) If there is a complaint ser- vice in the:store where you made your purchase, use it, If not, talk to sémeone in authority,’ such as the manager. A face-to-face discussion is best. : 6) Let the other party know that there is something you want done to-satisfy your complaint. Request specifics as to * how and when something will be done, and get the other person’s name in case you have to refer to this conversation later. If you write to someone in authority, keep a copy — and don’t write sarcastical- ly. If you end up in small claims court you'll want to prove that you've acted re- sponsibly. Be business- like, explain what hap- pened, and make your re- quest for action. Make sure that you have a name to write to, such as the sales manager or company president. Public libraries have sources listing the names of company presi- dents. If calls: and letters don’t help, consult a provincial or local consumer centre, a local newspaper or” broadcast station.
