What the public doesn’t see is what Lewis does when he's not in the chamber. As clerk, Lewis is the expert on parliamentary procedure and besides writing rulings for the Speaker on various matters, provides advice on rules and regulations of the house for all politicans. A high school dropout, Lewis was a commercial artist for three years before deciding to heed his father's advice and enter law school. Shortly after Lewis was called to the bar in 1939, the premier of the day, Liberal Mitchell Hepburn, gave him a job as assistant solicitor in a branch of the Treasury Department, where he stayed until he joined the navy in 1943. LED TO CAREER After his discharge, he was confined to hospital with rheumatoid arthritis, an ailment that led to his lifetime career. He was offered a position in private practice by David Croll, then an Ontario cabinet minister. But Lewis house. It was the most exciting and most debate.” Lewis also notes that the art of oratory has almost died among today’s politicians. “There are some effecti i but none that I ean think of that I would describe as orators,” says Lewis, who lists former Liberal leader Farquhar Oliver as the best interlocutor he ever heard. Lewis's most recent project is a book on parliamentary procedure, filled with anecdotes to illustrate the hows and whys of the assembly. The title of the book aptly sums up a man who has devoted a lifetime to parliamentary tradition: The House is My Home. i o i Hi rH i Ht i Hit H ut TE ‘Th tieli i de TY Sy a, EN Owned and Operated by Blackie Holdings Ltd. 24 HOUR TOWING & SERVICE © Good selection of used parts * We buy used cors * Free pick-up of most unwanted cars * Most parts quorontesd 30 doys * Buy ‘* oF less of new price (parts) WE DON'T HAVE IT — WE'LL FIND IT! a 1 oer Call 365-5161 —'81 OLDS REGENCY 98— Bacon still setting records QUEBEC (CP) — When Lise Bacon was first elected to the Quebec national as- sembly in 1973, she was the lone woman sitting in the legislature. Today, 13 Liberals and four Parti Quebecois women have joined her in the 122- seat legislature, but Bacon is still setting records. Shortly after the Dec. 2 election that swept the Lib- erals to power, Bacon was named deputy premier by Premier Robert Bourassa — the first woman to hold the post in Quebec. Bourassa has also put her in charge of several “hot is- sues,” as she called them in a recent interview. As minister of cultural af- fairs, she will have to decide whether Quebec will pry film distribution rights from the giant U.S. distribution hou- ses. Now 51, Bacon first want- ed to run for the party in her home town of Trois-Rivieres in 1970. Unfortunately for her, Trois-Rivieres was once the fiefdom of Maurice Duplessis, the lone-time Union Nation- ale premier. “When I wanted to run in 1970 they told me Trois- Rivieres was too conser- vative and they would never vote for a woman,” Bacon re- brother Guy Bacon to run for the pgsty, even though he lived outside the riding. “I decided I'd become president of the party and show them what I could do.” She was elected party president in 1970 and again in the next two years. Bacon's first electoral test came in 1973, when seh won the Montreal-area riding of Bourassa. With the victory came her first job as a minis- ter in a Bourassa govern- ment. In the three years before the Liberals were defeated by the PQ in 1976, she served as minister of state for social affairs, minister of consumer affairs and immigration min. ister.
