News photo by Neil Rachynski RAPE ROCKS SELKIRK Mi Selkirk College student answers seven charges stemming from Aug. 27 incident NEWS STAFF A 17-year-old Selkirk College student is still attending classes despite facing seven criminal charges, including sex- ual assault with a weapon. The accused, who cannot be identified under the Young Of- fenders Act, was arrested in Nelson on Sept. 2, following an Aug. 27 break-in at a Castlegar residence. The accused has been charged with breaking and enter- ing of a dwelling house, sexual assault with a weapon, un- lawful confinement, threatening, illegal use of a bank conve- nience card, theft under $1,000 and possession of stolen prop- erty. The break-in occurred at a Sixth Avenue residence. The female victim — also a Selkirk student — now faces the possibility of meeting the alleged attacker on campus. “There is the possibility for there to be brief contact,” said Crown prosecutor Scott Bell, pointing to the small size of the Castlegar campus. The Castlegar RCMP would neither confirm nor deny that the arrest was made following a tip from a Nelson photo lab which became alarmed when it discovered pictures of the vic- tim while developing a roll of film dropped off by the accused. Neither police nor Bell would confirm or deny that the vic- tim was blindfolded during the attack. However, Castlegar RCMP Staff Sgt. Doug Hall did say that “a lot of what you say is fact.” Castlegar Const. Larry Oster, who is heading up the in- vestigation, would not say if the victim knew the name of the accused. “(The victim) doesn’t know as much as the police, or I know,” Bell added. Bell said that the victim has been provided with a Crown services worker in Nelson for counselling. Meanwhile, the accused was released on bail following a Sept. 3 hearing. According to the terms of bail, the young of- fender must report daily to the Castlegar RCMP, abide by a curfew, turn in his passport and have no contact with the vic- tim. Bell said that the bail supervisor “may phone the residence” to see if the accused is following curfew orders. sce that this existing bail supervisor is doing this,” Bell sai Police are still looking for a second suspect involved in the break-in. The accused’s next court appearance is on Sépt.16. COUNCILLORS GET MIXED REACTION FOLLOWING RELEASE OF REPORT, PAGE 3
