CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, Sept. 7, 1961 CASTLEGAR NEWS Established in Nineteon Hundred and Forty-Seven DIRECTIONAL SIGNS AND ROCKS “Two subjects which might well be referred to the Castlegar and District Chamber of Commerce's roads and bridges committee for prompt action once the hamber r after its re- cess are the matters of the directional highway signs located at Warfield and the alleged “falling rocks” between Castlegar and Nelson. The highway sign at Warfield. directs traffic to “Nelson via Castlegar Ferry” over Highway. No. 3 or to. “Nelson via Salmo” .over Highway No. 3A. The word “ferry” is certainly prejudicial to tourist traffic and-it can safely be assumed that most tourists are acquainted with road maps and realize that the Castlegar route to Nelson requires crossing the Columbia river by ferry. ‘ If the word ferry must be included on the sign, then perhaps the sign could be reworded to read “Nelson via Two Free Castlegar Ferries” or “Nelson Via Free Castlegar Ferry.” And while the GOING JUST A LITTLE TOO FAR A large manufacturer of electrical goods. announced recently that it had “sol- ved the problem of Japanese price com- petition in the Christmas decorative light market.” : Apparently this company, and others of the same kind, had been manufactur- ing Christmas lights for many years for distribution organizations that sold the lights under their own trade names. The garage operators charged bitter- ly that some agents are advising clients to obtain as many as five estimates on col- lision repair costs. : They said some agents are also advis- ing clients to take their vehicles to a spec- ific garage without first consulting the insurance:company cr the assigned adjust- er. They said these practices together result in serious losses. of garage time, and ‘unnecessarily cause costly confusion among clients, garages and adjusters. ~ The garagemen are serious, so serious they. are considering advising their cus- roads and bridges committee is about the matter of attempting to have the sign changed, it might be an idea to time the drive from the Warfield sign to Nelson’s city limits obeying all speed signs and travelling through Salmo, and to also time the drive from the Warfield sign to Nelson via Castlegar. Our bet is that the trip through Castlegar is shorter than the one through Salmo. ‘ The other matter which the Cham- ber’s roads and bridges committee’ might well look into is the road reports issued daily over the Trail radio station.
