Shortly three Jane signs were installed on Columbia Avenue by the Department of Public Works, of B.C. or rather the signs for them were installed, advising motorists they must stop when there is someone who wishes to cross the street at that point. The other evening we were watching the traffic flash by through our village. We saw a couple of pedestrians at one of the three _pedestrian crossings, waiting to cross. They waited for’ almost ten minutes before the line of automobiles had all flashed by. A couple .of times, knowing they, were in a lane where they supposedly had * the right of way, they tried to cross only to be blasted back to the curb again by an indignant motorist and his horn. One can see such sights in our community constantly. They make-us wonder what crossing lanes are for anyway. Where can a pedestrian cross a street safely if not at a crossing lane? When are the Castlegar Detachment RCMP officers ‘going to begin enforcing the law with regards to the crossing lanes as they promised to do at the same time they promised to enforce all the village's traffic “by-laws?
