Page 8B Castlegar woman singing her way to the top SHARLENE IMHOFF Sun Editor Elaine Ryder is hoping to sing her way to the top—the top of a talent search that is, which could result in 4 signing deal with a recording compa- ny. The conclusive end to an eight-week long competition occurred last Tuesday night in Rosarios in Trail, with Ryder taking the top spot. The British Columbia Country Music Association's Talent Search for 1993 is taking place throughout the province, and Ryder was the winner for the West and East Kootenays. She now travels to Kam loops for the Regionals which are scheduled to take place May 13. If she is successful in Kamloops, she will then pro- ceed to Vancouver and from there, if she again places in first, she will travel to Toronto for the finals. If she is success. ful in Toronto, a signing deal with a recording company awaits Ryder. Ryder, 28, sang two songs by Lone Justice during her performance in Trail. One of them, called Stand Up and The Castlégar Sun Wednesday, April 21, 1993 Elaine Ryder Take It, is about one's personal faith and the tests which each one of us must endure before succeeding. Incidentally, it’s these two performers whom Ryder is compared to most often. Though she maintains that she does not mimic, but instead concentrates each day on developing her own voice and style ‘I practice compulsively each day. But I’ve never worked at trying to sound like someone else. I want to sound like me—and I do,” she said Although she has been singing since she was a child, Ryder became serious about her abilities as a singer/song- writer when she was entering her late teens.
